Peter was born in Moscow and was Czar Alexis 14th child. Peter ruled Russia with his brother Ivan V until 1696 when he died, shortly after Peter was named Sovereign of Russia. Peter was known as “the great” once he proclaimed Russia as an Empire in 1721.
