Other countries were starting to realize how powerful the United States was. The government was getting stronger with power too. This is called The Era of Good Feelings. The government is starting to take a greater role in the economy. In 1816, the Second Bank of the United States was established. The Protective Tariff was passed. It protected the United States good sales from foreign competitors because they had been selling their goods for less. The Americans did not like the Protective Tariff because they could not buy what they wanted for the low price. Central Government also started to strengthen over the states too. The branch of the National Bank was taxed by the state of Maryland and this went to court. The court ruled that states cannot pass any law that violates a federal law. After that, another case was taken to court, but it was Gibbons against Ogden. A steamboat traveled from New Jersey to New York. The decision was that the states could not regulate it because it was “interstate commerce”, so it was a job for Congress. The people were frustrated because the states kept trying to control them. The United States not only was implementing a bigger role in government, but it was also took a bigger role in the world! Spain decided they could no longer protect Florida and decided to give it to the United States through the Adams- Onis Treaty of 1819. The Monroe Doctrine was also created. It was created because the United States wanted their trade to be protected with Latin America, so it stated that European nations could not interfere with the free nations. The citizens were excited for the expansion and the gain of protection in the trade with the newly independent Latin America. By saying that, “Any common person could hold office,” Jackson was supporting the system he created. He used this system to prevent politicians from controlling the government. The people generally like this system and even said, “to the victor goes to spoils.” Jackson was afraid of the government’s powers. He even attacked politicians that he had the impression was untrustworthy or threatening. Politicians were scared of Jackson because he was so unpredictable and stubborn. Jackson made everyone equal because he did not believe in special benefits for the rich. He even shut down the bank because he thought it favored the wealthy! Rather than having high and low classes, everyone is now identified as equals. Jackson worked independently. He did not want to consult with Congress or other politicians. This let him have the first and last say in any decisions. This did not go over well with the people because they had no say in situations that affected them. He vetoed so many acts and even acquired the nickname “King Andrew I.” Jackson was for the people, but times were difficult when it came to
