How Did The Depressed Max Deal With Feak's Death

Decent Essays
Max was affected by Freak’s death in many ways. He became depressed because he lost the person who was always there for him. They went on many adventures together, and conquered the world together. When Freak died, Max was so depressed he couldn’t deal with it because Freak was a big part in his life. A piece of evidence to support this is, as the text states, “I hid in the down under for days and days and kept the door closed, which is why I missed the funeral and Fair Gwen going away” (Philbrick 158). Guilt is a recurring theme in the novel, especially when it comes to Hans Hubermann when his life was spared in France during World War I thanks to Erik Vandenburg’s, whose life wasn’t spared. While World War I, Eric was in the army with him, the same group, and Eric is the reason Hans was able to stay behind when he suggested Hubermann to write a few dozen letters by coming up and saying his name along with “Immaculate handwriting, sir, immaculate” (Zuzak, 178). Ultimately, Max’s fate was left in the hands of Dr. Davis, along with the school’s administration. The choice to suspend Max was an unjust decision that went against many Jewish teachings, including the teachings of Talmud Bavli. The text states, “How do we know that when a person tells something to his friend, the latter may not repeat it until the person says to him, ‘go and say’?” (Talmud Bavli, Yoma, 4b) The administration ignored the fact that the obscene comment that Max claimed to be a joke, was essentially spread by Jonathan to the entire school after Jonathan reported Max to the administration.…

The ending consisted of Helmuth being sadly executed. I expected the ending because on page 77, when Helmuth and Gerhard were listening to the radio the newscaster states, “Violations will be punished by imprisonment or by death”. Later on in the novel, Helmuth does the unthinkable and listens to the forbidden radio stations to figure out if the Nazis were telling the truth. Helmuth has concluded that the Nazis were not telling the truth. The people were being lied to!…

The control the war had over Septimus is indisputable and shows its continuity. Septimus committing suicide was one of the most compelling and “in your face” signs that the war truly never ended, nor will it truly ever end for those who were in combat. One of the signs a war is still going on is that people are dying as a result from it, and here Septimus died directly as a result of the war. He died because he could no longer bear to live with the memories of the war, the psychological pain of the war, the person the war had turned him into. For him, death was finally his freedom from the current war he faced, which was he war in his mind.…
