First off, Texas fought for love. Texans loved the way of life they had and all the ways of the south. In Document C, O.M. Roberts and the Texas State Gazette both said that Texas could secede from the Union, however President Abraham Lincoln said otherwise, “(N)o state upon its own mere motion can lawfully get out of the Union.”(C) This clearly started some tension between Texas and the Union. They didn’t like how they didn’t have the right to leave if they wanted to,but they did agreed more with the southern rights.
Last but definitely not least, Texas fought in the Civil War because they favored preserving slavery. In Document A it truly shows how slaves are affecting the economy, and it’s in a positive way. Plus, in Document B, it says that the whites are superior to the blacks and slaves. “...the African race had no (part) in their establishment; that they were rightfully held as an inferior and dependent race…”(B) Following that, in Document D John Wesley Rabb told his mother to hide the slaves in the mountains, “...you had better send the negros up in the mountains....” This is the most important reason because slavery had such an impact on why Texas fought in the Civil War.
