Hitler and Roosevelt were both master communicators, using propaganda, mass media, and especially the radio to convey certain messages to their people. In America during the 1930’s, the Great Depression was going on. Causing many people to lose their jobs and their homes. Roosevelt desperately wanted to calm the people and provide an optimistic view. At this time around two-thirds of the U.S population had a radio in their home. Many people would tune in to hear what was called, ‘fireside chats.’ In these, Roosevelt would made the public feel comfortable, and offer a new sense of confidence in America. Roosevelt also utilized mass media, having people make movies to help show off America's past and what it could be in the future. Alongside these movies were magazines like the popular, ‘Life magazine’, which sometimes printed optimistic pictures of the public and life during the Great Depression.

In Nazi Germany, Hitler didn’t want people to question him when it came to creating a superior race, stemmed from the aryan race. A way people would speak out against the government was through writing. While books like Hitler's, ‘Mein Kampf” were allowed and encouraged, others were not. Popular authors like Albert Einstein and Karl Marx were a few of the many authors banned. Nazi officials would go into libraries and rip books off the shelf, only to burn them in a fire on the streets.
