The Early Civilization of Egypt The civilization of Egypt was of the greatest ancient civilizations. The ancient Egyptians made great achievements and were some of the greatest early innovators. Egypt had great rulers and used some advantages to develop a great society. As with every society, they also had to deal with difficult hardships. There many reasons as to why Egypt became a great civilization, but without one river there may never have been a society. Ancient Egypt was not the ideal location for a bustling society. In fact, most of Egypt is desert due to lack of rainfall. A single geographic landmark called the Nile River was the only reason they became a society at all (Life Along the Nile). The Nile River gave Egypt some of the most fertile farmland of their time due to the annual floods. This gave Egyptians an advantage over the Mesopotamians because the floods of the Nile happened about the same time every year while the Mesopotamian floods were unpredictable (Life along The Nile). There was not much representation of the people in ancient Egypt. Much was learned about these ancient government leaders from their tombs, which had their job descriptions written into them (The Government of Ancient Egypt). The government of modern Egypt is much different. Modern Egyptian leaders are elected instead of appointed. Economy is the backbone of every society. Farming was the source of the great wealth of ancient Egypt (The Ancient Egyptian Economy). It used some of the most fertile land in the world to produce surpluses that could be traded. They also raised cattle in this area and also caught fish from the Nile river. Most of the products manufactured were consumed but the excess was traded with other regions. They taxed their civilians heavily and stockpiled natural resources for themselves (The Ancient Egyptian Economy). Even with the high taxes, Egypt’s economy was one of the most successful of the ancient
