As the development of animation continued and people started to find a real passion for it, one of the most famous and passionate animators was Walt Disney. His company created many animated shorts based around his first character, Mickey Mouse, but Walt had even bigger goals for animation. He wanted to make the first full-length animated feature film. He had a strong belief that animation could and should be taken seriously as a storytelling medium. This first film that he created was Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. Each frame of the film was hand drawn by Walt’s team of animators and was labored over for years. Not many people believed in it, but Walt had enough support to create his dream. When the film was created, audiences loved it. People who saw it were moved emotionally and went to see it in theaters again and again. Picasso said: “When I was young I could draw and paint like Raphael. It’s taken me a lifetime to draw like a child” (Keane). This is the mindset of an artist. Their “spirit is that of freedom and fearlessness” (Keane). Each artist has a sense of childlike wonder towards their craft and are given the opportunity to express something beautiful. Disney animator Glen Keane said “When you draw, you express something real and visceral. When making a line, it’s sort of a seismograph of your soul. The soul of any kind of creative art form is freedom” (Keane). Even my grandfather, co owner of the Kalman & Pabst Photo Group, said “If you obey all the rules, you miss all the fun” (Pabst). These ideas are the basic principles and ideals of art and the many types that are included within that.
The art form of animation is one that has changed radically since its conception. Through animation, people have been given the opportunity to create whatever they desire. Animators have taken the concepts created in the past and taken them to a whole new level. The opportunities we have in the future are incredible and will give a new age of animators infinity opportunities. Animation has evolved from pottery, murals and phenakistoscopes in the past, hand drawn and digital technology in the present, and 3D digital drawing allowing animators to unleash their full potential in the
