Horses are not raised for meat like other animals such as cows or pigs. Horses are raised as companion or performance animals. They are meant to do such things like have successful racetrack careers or compete in the Olympics. Some of the horses going to slaughter are ones that were not successful in their career and were irresponsibly sold to the wrong person. All types of horses get shipped off to the slaughterhouses whether it be pregnant mares, young foals, or older horses. Kill buyers have been known to go into horse owner’s fields and steal their horses to take them to slaughter. As a horse owner, this is a sickening feeling knowing my horses may not be safe. Unfortunately, kill buyers can easily disguise themselves when it comes to buying horses. They will often have other people contact the owner that is selling the horse and make it seem like they are going to a loving home when they will actually end up at the slaughterhouse. There have been many cases where this has happened, most of the time it happens with horses that are coming off the
