In Episode 5, “Route Talk”, the host of the podcast, Sarah Koenig, and producer Dana Chivvis conducts simulations to measure the amount of time Adnan would have taken to kill Hae Min Lee. “The state contended that Hae was killed between 2:15 and 2:36 P.M. at the Best Buy parking lot, about a mile from Woodlawn High School,” according to Koenig. Adnan believes that the time frame of the prosecution timeline is way too narrow. He insists that twenty one minutes is not enough time to commit a murder, especially in the broad daylight. After the final bell rings in Woodlawn High School, it is nearly impossible to leave immediately, for they must wait for the buses to leave to pick up their cars.…
The movie franchise that began with “The Terminator” in 1984 has had its ups and downs. Being the first film of the series, “The Terminator” did not make a lot of money in total given that it had little hype going into it and it co-starred a relative unknown with some German sounding name that it turns out was Austrian. However, considering it only had a budget of $6.4 million and it made $78 million worldwide according to the Wikipedia page about the franchise, the producers were no doubt happy with the result. “Terminator 2” was the highpoint of the franchise in terms of box office draw and overall awesomeness.…
“We honor our past because it shapes our future,” this is one of the many quotes that Otterbein University holds dearly. Otterbein University holds this value greatly. Otterbein gives equality to all students, faculty, and others since 1847. Before any women’s rights and the abolishment of slavery, Otterbein University allowed people of color and women to receive a fair and equal education. Otterbein University is a mid-sized college located in Westerville, Ohio.…
It was Thomas Merton, a Catholic English writer who once said “To say that I am made in the image of God is to say that love is the reason for my existence, for God is love. Love is my true identity. Selflessness is my true self. Love is my true character. Love is my name” (Merton).…
This became a major issue due to the fact that in order for NAGPRA to apply, Native American tribal groups must be able to provide evidence that the remains discovered had been buried on what was once or currently. Thus in the eyes of the Native American community, to deny their claims of being the descendants of the Kennewick man equates to denying their religion and traditions. (Jones 2005 cited by Sayer 2010: 112). This is due to the fact that according to oral tradition and religious beliefs, their ancestors were placed there over 10,000 years ago however the Supreme Court did not rule oral tradition as viable evidence of that particular tribe inhabiting the region at that time (Herman 2015: 181). Thus while NAGPRA was created to settle…
Indeed, quiz show provides a feeling of everyone has equal opportunities to win no matter what job, talent, class, gender or race they are through doing same quizzes. As Holmes has argued about Fiske's explanation of games and rituals, games separate out winners from contestants as different, but rituals bringing different individuals in same levels and implying commonality (2008, p.93). In Mastermind, rituals fill in that idea by reducing individual's differences and make them compete at same starting line as equal competitor. For example, the host askes each contestant's name, job and the specialist area they choose to do the quiz before they start to answer, and tells competitors that each of them have equal time to answer the quizzes which…
In the novel The Kite Runner the author uses diction in many ways to convey the different opinions of different characters and to help the reader understand Amir’s point of view on things. For example in the text Amir states” Panic. The basement had been dark. The fuel tank was pitch-black. I looked right, left, up, down, waved my hands before my eyes, didn't see so much as a hint of movement.…
On February 11th, CNN published an exclusive story headlined “California launches investigation following stunning admission by Aetna medical director”. The story reveals an investigation launched by California insurance commissioner, Dave Jones, into the insurance company after its former medical director, Dr. Jay Ken Iinuma, allegedly admitted under oath during a legal deposition that he never looked at patients’ medical records when deciding whether to deny or approve care (Drash). Dr. Iinuma’s deposition stems from a lawsuit filed against the health insurance company by Gillen Washington, a college student suffering from a rare immune disorder, for breach of contract and bad faith. Washington says he was denied coverage for an infusion…
On the other hand, the distributed self would suggest that how people experience the world and make sense of it is primarily a result of socio-cultural processes, which varies over time and space. Constructionists conceptualize depression as an identity continually renegotiated via linguistic exchange and social performance. They would argue that the biological attitude excludes the social and linguistic dimensions of experience from consideration; social constructionist perspective is essential to understand how subjectivity and meaning are constructed in language and social interaction. For example I will briefly discuss the argument of gender differences in depression and how social constructionists consider that through looking at the ‘material discursive’ practices it is the pressures of society, which causes depression. They argue that a certain pressure is thrust upon women to be doing activities that fits the ideology of being a ‘good woman’ this can exhaust the woman’s body therefore causing depression.…
1) In this paper I argue that B.C. Johnson’s argument about the problem of evil and God when it comes to dependence is weak because his work field explanation fails. I will address this argument as the “Dependence Argument.” As you read you will notice the simple addition to the job field he addresses points out holes in his “Dependence Argument.” Johnson’s following argument, which I will call the “Moral Urgency Argument,” provides a similar attack to the theist explanation for God allowing evil, but by taking out the “Dependence Argument” Johnson’s argument becomes stronger.…
I accept this debate and wish Tejretics good luck. I am sure this will be a fascinating debate. Clarification: First I would like to remind my opponent and those reading what this debate is not about. This debate is not about the social impact of religion.…
Within this essay, I will argue that Galen Strawson’s basic argument, presented in Your Move: The Maze of Free Will, is correct about the impossibility of ultimate moral responsibility. I will do this by first explaining the basic argument as proposed by Strawson, then raising an objection to it concerning the distinction between the self and the way you are by denying the second premise. And finally, I will be refuting the objection. Strawson’s basic argument can be boiled down to the simple notion that one cannot be ultimately morally responsible. He claims that anything you do in any circumstance is an effect of who you are, and the way you are.…
With my visual argument project my main intent was to portray the idea of the current and upcoming generations dependency of their mobile/technological devices. The reason I chose this argument in particular because I have seen this problem being very prominent first had. I feel that everywhere I go I see young children constantly on their cellphone and technological devices. I see this in my own family too, when we were younger (older cousins and I) we were constantly outdoor plays sports or any other physical activities. Now a constant theme that I encounter when walking into family occasion is the younger kids are rather drawn to their iPads and mobile devices.…
The Scientific Method The scientific method refers to an organized or systematic way of figuring out problems, where scientific questions are asked and answered by way of conducting methodological experiments and making observations. There are six steps or parts pertinent to the technique, the first of which entails asking of the question relating to what is intended to be learnt or establishing the purpose of the study. The second step of the technique entails carrying out research to find information from existing literature in books and other sources. The information can also be garnered by talking with professionals in the related field before experimentation can commence.…
Abstract is one of the most important parts of the writing. I usually don’t read any book without reading the abstract at first. Also, the abstract part helps me a lot when I buy some books, I usually skim through the abstract and if I like the content, I will buy it. The writer here is talking about the abstract and how to write it, he started with an example of the abstract of this book “21 genres”. I am pretty sure he wrote this part after writing the whole book, because it’s a great abstract and describes the book in a perfect way.…
