Homework: Article Analysis

The author of “The Benefits of Homework” makes the claim that homework can positively affect student performance in school. To convey this claim the author gives many examples on how homework can benefit students. I think the author effectively supports this claim very well in this article. The author starts off with some of the negatives of homework, “ It takes up time and cuts into family life” also “Homework is too repetitive, too hard, and just too much.” I find this very odd for an author to start out with the negatives of homework rather than the positives. To give a counter-argument to the statement the author states “When homework supports a student's learning and does not take too much time to complete, it can have several benefits.” …show more content…
To support this the author states “While doing the same kind of math problem over and over may seem boring, it can make knowing how to solve that type of problem automatic.” Then goes on to say that homework supports better study skills taught at school. The author states “Studying for a test prepares the student not only to learn the material, but also how best to study.” The author effectively supported the claim that doing homework the student could achieve and learn more. Furthermore the author also suspects that the benefits of homework go even beyond the classroom. The author states “Doing homework helps students learn important skills, such as self-discipline and time management.” This is great evidence proving the authors claim. The author says homework benefits families as well. “A 2007 MetLife survey of teachers, parents, and students across the United States showed that almost 9 in 10 parents said that they helping their children with homework because it gave them time to spend with their children.” The author makes the claim that homework can positively affect students performance in school. The author gives numerous amounts of evidence proving the homework and benefit the student. The evidence the author gives effectively supports the

After reading Etta Kralovec and John Buell’s essay, “End Homework Now,” I can say that I’m of two minds about their claim that homework has questionable benefits. On one hand, I agree that homework it isn’t as imperative as some parents believe. On the other hand, I’m not sure if homework is completely unnecessary. I agree that that homework isn’t as vital as it’s thought to be, a point that needs emphasizing since so many people still believe that “If our students don't do lots of homework, their test scores will never be competitive internationally” (Kralovec, Buell).…

In his article for “The Atlantic Monthly”, Jonathan Rauch asserts that homework would have a significant impact on the quality of graduating students. His position of increasing homework and the amount of time spent studying outside of the classroom is well supported by both school administrators and an educational psychologist. Jonathan Rauch also points out that schools can make adjustments to their programs of instruction, but cannot do so without protest from either parents or the students. He shows that the children in the United States are lazy and parents could do more for them instead of relying on the school. Parents complain about how the schools instruct and when they try to change.…

Did you know, homework was viewed as a sin during the Progressive Era because it deprived children from their play time? Today, society is expressing similar concerns. Homework seldom improves academic performance. Sure, through homework one can get high scores in a standardized test, but in my own point of view using standardized tests as indicators of how well a student understands a lesson can be inaccurate. Students tend to memorize and not understand the lesson in means of studying for a test.…

My Declaration of Independence I am here today to announce my frustration with the amount of homework given on any day. The problem with all of the homework is that some people have other things to do, and may not have time to complete all of the given homework. I think it’s safe to say that the amount of homework is just a bit too much, and not completing all of it seriously can bring down some grades for people. People do not deserve to have homework in every class, almost every day.…

Comparatively, the screen time argument is something that everyone can determine for themselves, whether it be good or bad, yet the facts mustn’t be set aside. The media naturalness theory asks the important question that follows: “What should happen when we selectively suppress face-to-face communication elements (e.g., colocation, the ability to employ facial expressions, etc.) through e-communication technologies?” (Kock pg. 2). Realistically, there must be an answer as to what happens when we suppress face-to-face communication through e-communication technologies such as (e-mail, video games, and smartphones). The Media Naturalness Theory brings up the examples of colocation (business) and the ability to employ facial expressions, which…

It can consolidate the knowledge that students have already studied, train students' creativity, and develop students' intelligence. Moreover, it is very essential to require some homework in the teaching process. Butler (1987) states, “Homework is the time students spend outside the classroom in assigned activities to practice, reinforce or apply newly-acquired skills and knowledge and to learn necessary skills of independent study” (p.17). Most homework assigned by teachers is for practice and preparation purposes because instructional homework may be assigned to help students. The homework policy should be that the quality of work would help students learn and help them look over sources that have to do with their work, encouraging them to read more in depth and make the assignment challenging, but also, help them learn the concept. The problem with homework is the amount assigned is what teachers think would help students, but it’s mostly just copying from their textbooks and changing it in their own words which can help, but it’s not as reliable. Teachers should change the structure of homework by not just adding more to write, but have the students question the work, and learn something after finished with homework. The article, "Why Homework Should Be Balanced" states homework can “boost learning, but doing too…
