Homeless On Campus Summary

This article primarily focuses on the struggles on homeless college students by giving ample examples of college students who have suffered from abuse or poverty stricken lifestyles. Bader talks about the struggles college students have faced struggles thus leading up to their homelessness coupled with the conflicts they endure while attending college. Some of the struggles these students went through before they became homeless have been similar across all the cases mentioned in this article, such as an abusive family, parents who stopped paying for the students rent, or those who simply can't afford the cost of living. The way these students attempt to deal with being homeless is sleeping at their friends house if available, couch surfing, or sleeping in the woods just to name a few. As doleful as this is, Bader believes if people paid more attention to the severities of the conditions these homeless students are in financially as well as physically then the situation for the students wouldn't be as substandard. Bader says that colleges aren't used to helping poor people considering colleges used to be for wealthy people who could afford the basic necessities. However, some professors have gone out of their way to helping these homeless students by providing a place to sleep like in their office, preferentially a place to shower like in the gym. However this article would not be profoundly reliable for an essay due to the time frame of 2003 to 2004 that this report took place.
