Service learning is a type of learning experience that involves community service to teach using real world scenarios. For my service-learning project I volunteered at Holston Health and Rehabilitation Center. Holston is a place for senior citizens to come when they are either too old to care for themselves at home or are recovering from surgery. I do many things when I volunteer there. I can help with anything from decorating, printing, organizing, or cleaning. I will be discussing the staff and facility, the type of patients helped, the specifics of what I did, how the patients responded, and how it pertains to the life span of psychology.

First, the patients are a great example of late adulthood. Pretty much all the patients are sixty-five or older. Second, it can prove many theories in the psychology. Theories such as “ageism” and “infantilization” can sometimes be seen throughout Holston. Ageism is really just treating people based on their age, while infantilization is treating someone like a baby. Infantilization is demonstrated when the nurses talk to the patients. The nurses’ voices automatically get higher; volume gets louder, and words get more drawn out, so the patient can understand better. Bingo and blackjack are examples of ageism. These two games are commonly associated with and played by elders. And there is no exception at HHRC. Sadly, death is also a psychological factor at HHRC. Although it is a major factor in life, it can be very scary for some people. However, even though it is not mentioned much around the patients at Holston, the patients seem at peace and some even expectant of the day their time comes. Psychology can be tied into many factors at HHRC, the good and bad.
In conclusion, I think Holston is a great place. It is also a fantastic facility to observe and interact with people in late adulthood. It is easy to see their lifestyles, abilities, and their interests. I did many tasks while volunteering at HHRC. Each task I did affected a patient in some way. Whether it was a positive or negative reaction, it certainly impacted me. I have really loved getting to know all the staff and patients and maybe even learning some psychology lessons through Holston Health and Rehabilitation
