Holston Service Learning Project
Service learning is a type of learning experience that involves community service to teach using real world scenarios. For my service-learning project I volunteered at Holston Health and Rehabilitation Center. Holston is a place for senior citizens to come when they are either too old to care for themselves at home or are recovering from surgery. I do many things when I volunteer there. I can help with anything from decorating, printing, organizing, or cleaning. I will be discussing the staff and facility, the type of patients helped, the specifics of what I did, how the patients responded, and how it pertains to the life span of psychology.
The staff and facility at HHRC are absolutely excellent. I got the

First, the patients are a great example of late adulthood. Pretty much all the patients are sixty-five or older. Second, it can prove many theories in the psychology. Theories such as “ageism” and “infantilization” can sometimes be seen throughout Holston. Ageism is really just treating people based on their age, while infantilization is treating someone like a baby. Infantilization is demonstrated when the nurses talk to the patients. The nurses’ voices automatically get higher; volume gets louder, and words get more drawn out, so the patient can understand better. Bingo and blackjack are examples of ageism. These two games are commonly associated with and played by elders. And there is no exception at HHRC. Sadly, death is also a psychological factor at HHRC. Although it is a major factor in life, it can be very scary for some people. However, even though it is not mentioned much around the patients at Holston, the patients seem at peace and some even expectant of the day their time comes. Psychology can be tied into many factors at HHRC, the good and bad.
In conclusion, I think Holston is a great place. It is also a fantastic facility to observe and interact with people in late adulthood. It is easy to see their lifestyles, abilities, and their interests. I did many tasks while volunteering at HHRC. Each task I did affected a patient in some way. Whether it was a positive or negative reaction, it certainly impacted me. I have really loved getting to know all the staff and patients and maybe even learning some psychology lessons through Holston Health and Rehabilitation

The Affordable Care Act of 2010 required that the services funded by the Centers of Medicare and Medicaid Services must be provided in a person-centered setting (Burm, 2014). Recently, however, this concept is beginning to get strictly implemented in most HCBS settings, in order to provide integrated and coordinated care. ‘Person-centered’ care allows for a holistic methodology to enhancing an individual’s health and well-being. Person-centered care focuses on an individual’s “physical health, intellectual health, social wellness, emotional wellness, creative being and spiritual being” (Burm, 2014). It allows for care to be planned based on an individual’s particular reference, values and goals.…

Being a student has taught me various things forcing me to change the way I look and approach things. In particular as an individual I have learned things as a writer, student, and human while doing a class assignment. The class assignment is a service learning project that consisted of doing research, interviewing, and volunteering in a field of the students choosing. For my service learning I choose the issues of corporations entering the real estate market. The reason I decided to do my service learning on that was since I have a personal connection to it.…

Starting my service learning experience was difficult at first but after planning and figuring out what I wanted to achieve from it, it became easier to accomplish. In the beginning of planning my SLE I knew that I wanted to help donate to a big organization. I repeatedly told myself “the smallest action can make a huge change”. It was a challenge to figure out where I was going to get the money from in order to donate. That was until I meet Ivonne Farfan, the owner of “RENTMEUSA”.…

Service learning is a reciprocal relationship between students and communities1; the focus is on enhancing the learning of all involved: the student, the teacher and the community, all of whom learn something from each other2. Students’ exposure to real life situations outside the classroom allows for application of theory as well as a prime opportunity for the student to work one on one in settings that are non contrived. This allows the student to develop and hone problem solving and critical thinking skills in a safe environment due to the presence of faculty members who are experienced in the field and can provide immediate feedback6. The students further benefit as noted in the International Journal of Dental Hygiene because “the interaction…

After observing the amount of litter, trash, and dead trees across my local park during my service-learning project, my insight about pollution and the cutting down of trees increased and lead me to have more empathy about the issue I was researching. For my service-learning project I participated in “Clark Park Cleanup”, the purpose of which was to assist in cleaning up Clark Park, planting trees, and promoting the importance of trees and clean parks for our environment. While completing this project I learned many things, some of which being the importance trees have on our environment, and how having clean parks are beneficial for our nation. It helped me understand the issue I was researching more deeply and helped me connect with the issue.
