1874 English Researcher C.R. Wright first created heroin by boiling morphine and acetic anhydride. It caused anxiety, vomiting and sleepiness after taken. He soon after stopped his research. 21 years later in 1895 German scientist Heinrich Dreser picked up where Wright left off and started distributing it in available over-the-counter form. As its popularity grew so did its unrestricted distribution. It was available over the counter and sent as free samples in the mail. By 1924 approximately 200,000 people in the U.S. were addicted. In 1924 Heroin was legally banned in the United States.
German Lopez wrote the article “Why some US cities are opening safe spaces for injecting heroin.” He states that cities in the US are fighting to open supervised drug consumption facilities or safe injection sites. They want to lower the amount of people using unsterile needles and overdosing. His article implies that it will stop drug overdoses. He backs that up by stating “avoid pushing in any dirt with the needle, and so on - all of which can reduce not just the risk, of overdose but other health problems related to drug use.” …show more content…
