Today, we do many things online. We do our banking, talk to friends and family, shop and watch tv shows, but all this we take for granted today was just a vague idea 50 years ago. In order to find how how we got this far lets go back to 1957. When it all began. In 1957 computers could really only work on one process at a time. This is known as batch processing. To speed up the computer speeds they had to build bigger computers to the point that the computers had to be stored in special cooled rooms. But then the developers couldn 't work directly on the computers anymore specialists had to be called in to connect them. Say for example I send someone an email. That would be asynchronous as it could take a while for them to get the email and it doesn’t notify me that that have read the email. This would typically be used in a low priority customer service request that doesn’t require immediate attention. Or for example sending an email that doesn’t require a response like a invoice or an automated thank you. Synchronous however would be your facebook, skype and instant messengers. This would be a help desk live chat for an important request, such as talking to a ISP about internet problems over the phone or speaking to distant relevant over the phone. These days with smartphones becoming so popular synchronous communication is becoming a lot more common with viber, tinder and facetime as some examples. Going back just 20 years there was no such service and it was mostly emails being sent with the odd exception of AOL chatting which wasn’t very common and not many people had computers back then. The fact that around the world more than one billion smartphones have been sold since 2007 shows just how much synchronous communication has become since there weren’t any smartphones 20 years
