L10 – Essay Activity
Discuss three historical examples of exclusion or discrimination, and explore what role constitutional provisions played in protecting or failing to protect these groups of people. Then give a specific example of contemporary discrimination or exclusion from today’s headlines. What do you think continues to motivate these attitudes and policies?
Workplace Discrimination:
Discrimination is directly reflected in the wages for similar work along different genders and ethnicities. For example, men as a general rule, earn more than women; and Whites make more money than Blacks and Hispanics. I have taken the following chart from Khan Academy, showing the narrowing of wage gaps between races and gender for the last 40 years. Workplace discrimination goes far beyond wage differences. For example, women have had to face ridicule for letting their ethnic identity show, verbal and physical abuse for wearing cultural attire, etc. Growing up in Latin America, I always found it interesting that women would straighten their hair every single week, and whenever it rained, they would use anything to protect their hair from getting wet.
When I grew older, I finally realized that they were doing this out of necessity, society had condition them to look as “White” as possible. They had to do this to make things easier for them in an educational or work setting.
One study from the International Labour Organization (ILO) shows that “Discrimination has also become more varied, and discrimination on multiple grounds is becoming the rule rather than the exception”.
