Russian political scene for more than a decade, as president and prime minister of the country. It is very clear that Putin has made influenced not only his country, but the rest of the world. His rulings and powers are notably great. It can be said that Putin has followed
Machiavelli’s advice regarding an effective ruling to a certain extent. Niccolò Machiavelli was an Italian political philosopher and statesman, and secretary of the Florentine republic.
Machiavelli’s reputation rests primarily on his works, The Prince, this brought him a reputation as an atheist and an immoral cynic. The Prince is an extended analysis of how to obtain and preserve political power, therefore this essay will explore Putin’s ruling and how it relates to The Prince referring to the military operations, the concept of love and goodwill and finally, the lion and the fox. Machiavelli authored The Prince as a practical guide for ruling, although some may argue that the book was intended as a satire and fundamentally a guide on how not to rule. …show more content…
Machiavelli’s intentions are clear from the very beginning, the dedication of the book to
Lorenzo de’ Medici, the ruler of Florence. The Prince is not particularly hypothetical or abstract, its prose is transparent and its logic incomplex. These attributes underline
Machiavelli’s desire to provide coherent, efficient understandable advice.
In his book, “The Prince,” Machiavelli stated that a good ruler should not only mirror previous great rulers and seek advice when needed “the prince must read histories and in them study the deeds of great men; he must examine the reasons for their victories and for their defeats in order to avoid the latter” (The prince, XIV), but he should also devote himself to the military operations and preserve power distinctly, and not to mention defeat or eradicate possible threats such as political conflicts and potential enemies. Some people may say that
Machiavelli’s advice that a competent leader should uphold effective military capability will help them survive in power in the modern-day world, Additionally, Machiavelli said that an efficient ruler should have the ability of amusing people or leaving them in awe, so they 2249672A 2 could be blind from severe issues that may intrude the ruler’s plans. Moreover, Vladimir Putin evidently portrays Machiavelli’s advice today on political power. Vladimir Putin is an individual who effectively upholds political and military power. In relation to the military, Putin is a leader who has made the most political change within the military “Putin has pushed the military further toward reform during the last year than in the previous 12 years since the collapse of the USSR. It is always possible that the military will outlast him as many have suggested.” (R.Herspring, 2005) This relates to Machiavelli’s advice that he should devote himself to the military operations and convey his power effectively. Putin has been a president and a prime minister consistently. He was never out of power’s reach. Putin is well known for showing off his strong masculinity to the public through several pictures. One may have seen one of him performing martial arts or him holding a weapon or dead animal. In addition to these pictures which convey a firm look, Putin tries to restore the Mother Russia’s pride of the cold war era and not to forget strengthening the power that the Russian military have. Therefore, it is clear that his tactics of entertaining people and increasing his popularity is working. Putin has received a sixty-seven percent approval rate throughout his presidential term. Just as Machiavelli advised to do so in order for his people to become unaware of any political issues. There are many themes which run throughout the Prince including, Goodwill and hatred. Machiavelli believes that to remain in power, a prince must avert the hatred of his people and is not necessary as such for him to be loved, but is more beneficial for him to be feared. “Whether it is better to be loved than to be feared, or on the contrary. I reply that one should like to be both one and the other, but since it
