In August, days before the school year began, Ally to the Little Rock Nine, Daisy Bates remembers a rock with a note being thrown to her window, the note reading, "Stone this time, Dynamite next. " On the first day of classes, before they set foot into the hallways of Central High School, they were hit with slurs and obscenities, with members of an angry white mob screaming, "No n***** b**** is going to get in our school, get out of here" and "drag her over to the street let's take care of the n*****." These quotes exemplify what those mobs thought of the children who were trying to attend Central High School—they thought that they were subhuman, the same way one would reach for bug spray if they saw a bug or buy mouse traps if they saw a mouse in their home. They called for them to be hung on a tree, to be dealt with like someone would deal with a common nuisance. As the school year went on, the treatment grew worse towards the students.…

Rather than waking up ready to learn each day, the nine woke up ready to have physical and emotional abuse from their peers. According to “There I Was in History”, students in the school created an effigy to represent the black students, yelling and stabbing the figure wishing they could do the same to them often saying, “Kill ’em, kill ’em!” (Pg. 93). Most of the students involved in the public shaming of the blacks apologized after, but one of the white student refused saying, “I was a product of my day and time, and I was acting from my early upbringing,”. In the late 1950s, racism was the norm rather than the exception and it was almost expected that the students would berate the blacks, despite their credentials.…

At Central High School, these nine brave souls were confronted with a mob of hatred and disgust. It was clear that “the immediate need for federal troops was urgent” (Doc 2) as these mobs became too large and started acts of violence against the students. Mayor Mann, who was the Mayor of Little Rock, was well aware of this situation and he had to send a telegram to the president describing the situation that had occurred. President Eisenhower responded in a televised speech in which he stated that the “individual rights and freedoms rest upon the certainty that the President and the Executive branch” (Doc 3) carry out the laws of the Federal Courts.
