Chocolate is one of the most beloved flavors and ingredients in the world and even the most popular in continents of Europe and North America. One popular brand; The Hershey Company, specializes in chocolate-related confections. One popular product is Hershey’s Milk Chocolate With Almonds. High quality and consistency in the product takes a long journey but ensured in every single chocolate bar. The process that is taken to manufacture each ingredient and form them into chocolate ties strongly to the five themes of geography; location, place, interaction, movement, and region.
The region is one theme of the themes of geography. It can be defined as a region of land, being political, cultural, climate, etc. One example of a region on the map is the vital ingredient that is required to make chocolate edible, sugar. Sugarcane only grows in specific locations; tropical and sunny areas. This links it to the theme of the geography of a region, namely a region with physical characteristics due to the region depending on the land and climate. In this case, in the areas of both Florida and Georgia, which combine both produce the majority of the sugar in the United States. The location that Hershey’s obtains their cane sugar is from both Lafayette, Georgia and Okeelanta, Florida. This can be linked to the climate and physical characteristics of a region. This is because humans interact with nature to collect resources. Cocoa harvesters generally don’t use farms, but instead, search around a designated areas and harvest ripe trees randomly. A place could be known as what you see when you arrive at the location. This can be anything created by nature or created by humanity. An example of place could be in Kerman, California on the map, where they produce almonds. This is due to the fact that California is by far the largest almond provider in the world, producing about 82% of the world’s almonds. The almond farm would be seen as a place with human characteristics since it was created by humans, even though there is a lot of nature. A processing plant is also a place with human characteristics because the entire building was created by humans as well. Movement is the movement of people, goods, and ideas. This can be through migration, exchange of knowledge, and trading. The ingredient providers of Hershey’s all utilize movement, through the exchange of goods. All the ingredients manufactured on the map are sent to one location in Hershey, Pennsylvania. This is the movement of goods because each company trades their ingredient for exchange; in this case, it is for money. There is one ingredient; milk fat, that is manufactured from all the way in New Zealand. This shows how the movement of ideas and people was able to spread to a secluded area such as that.
