When I read the 2016 article, “Children’s TV Has a Representation Problem” by current writer and filmmaker for Huffington Post Will Bryson, I had many thoughts on what he was saying. I agree with his statement that when two same-sex characters trying to have some type of romantic relationship in kids TV the networks automatically see this relationship as “salacious and inappropriate” like Bryson says. Even though I agree with this, I have to disagree with him on the fact that children TV isn’t getting anywhere in LGBTQ+ representation. I have many family members that are still very young, between the ages of 6-13, and when I see the shows they watch I am very surprised by how far kids TV has come. My cousin watches the show Steven Universe…

This ideological concept of hookup culture has also been described as a nationwide phenomenon, which has largely replaced traditional dating on college campuses. What is more shocking is that, these uncommitted sexual encounters are usually pursued by both participants, without the expectation of a continuing relationship. Similarly, recent entertainment media have also highlighted uncommitted sexual encounters found in films such as: Hooking Up which was released in 2009 that depicts the chaotic romantic and sexual lives of adolescent characters, and No Strings Attached, released in 2011 that featured the uncommitted elements of uncommitted sex, between two friends who attempt to negotiate a sexual nonromantic component of their relationship. Not only are hooking up taking place in colleges among the emerging young adults, but popular television shows, often portray hooking up, as acceptable and entertaining to the point of exploiting the lives of young…

Just as everyone has been an adolescent, everyone has seen a depiction of adolescence somewhere in the media, and although scholar Sarah Blakemore discusses how a teenager’s reckless behavior is caused by an underdevelopment in the brain, as shown in her TED Talk “The Mysterious Workings of the Adolescent Brain”, she is overlooking that it is not the brain that affects a teens decisions but the environment the teens are placed in. Although there is a large amount of media portraying adolescents, this essay will discuss The Suite Life of Zack and Cody, directed by Jim Geoghan, and how the show portrays adolescents behavior. In the show, adolescents behaviors vary from child to child. The twin boys, Zack and Cody, are wild. They run freely throughout…

Negative attitudes and stereotypes are a part of society; they become bigger issues when these thoughts and beliefs turn into actions, such as discrimination and aggression. Over the last decade strides have been made to change societal ideals and norms but research shows discrimination among particular groups remains high. The results of a study done by The National Gay and Lesbian Task Force shows that members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) community experience high rates of discrimination and violence (Grant et al., 2011). Theories on the formation of attitudes and stereotypes include Social Learning, Social Cognition, Implicit Association. Resent studies have started to examine the effects media can have on attitudes…

The Hollywood agenda is about trying to brainwash the views of children and adolescence. The popular ABC show ‘Pretty Little Liars’ features many examples of moral relativism. It shows premarital sex, student-teacher relationships, murder, and lying. This television program targets young teens (commencesensemedia.org), and is teaching them that these relationships and morals are normal and morally correct, and this is just one of the many examples. ‘Friends’ is one of the most popular television shows to ever hit the screen and while it does teach the value of friendship, it also teaches that regular premarital sex is normal, and divorce is normal.…

Gender roles have been portrayed differently throughout the history of the television sitcom. The media often portrays the conflicts between men and women, while adding a comedic twist to it. In the 1990’s women’s role in sitcoms had finally changed their character into more dominant and important figures compare to the sitcoms in earlier decades. Women have stepped out of traditional roles of the housewife, the mother and created the compelling female characters. While women began to play an independent role, men’s character in the 1990s also showed a significant change in an opposite way of being silly and trouble maker instead of being masculinity.…

Transition is a persisting and central concept in youth sociology, which has helped researchers better understand the paradigms shifts and inequalities in the various aspects of life such as education, employment, culture and family-life. Due to an overwhelming focus on youth transition from education to work in the past decades, scholars have been able to trace patterns of inequalities amongst people from different walks of life, which suggests the availability of opportunities and the trajectories people thus take are stratified. (Wyn & Woodman, Chapter 5: Transitions in 'Youth and Generation: Rethinking change and inequality in the lives of young people', 2014) This essay aims to examine the changes that the Australian educational system…

When Nanette Burstein’s award winning documentary “American Teen” was shown to a class of current american teens, myself included, the movie was ridiculed for its lack of accuracy. Although this is an almost accurate representation of many high school band geeks, it doesn’t give the complete image of him rather highlights the stereotypes. Burstein fails to include any of his school-work related stress rather she focuses on his search for love.…

Most children are exposed to ads and media multiple times on a daily basis. Seeing the ideas presented in these media forms over and over again has a big impact on how children’s social institutions are formed.
