Leaders must encompass a variety of skills, knowledge, and expertise to lead a robust team within the healthcare domain.
Virtuous leaders are hard to find within today's modern health care arena. To be a successful leader, I believe it is necessary to possess various leadership traits; these characteristics are sometimes first nature or cultivated by trial and error.
Key leadership traits include honesty, integrity, respect for one’s self and others, relational skills, and the ability to show empathy. Leaders within the healthcare sector face several challenges, some of these difficulties include balancing cost with quality care, cost containment, maintaining current laws and regulations, creating teams that produce quality care, technolgocial conversion issues and cultural differences.
The article by Paul Merrild titled “The Biggest U.S. Health Care Challenges Are Management Challenges” focuses on significant challenges such as quality and cost. “
The major problem with quality in the U.S. is finding a medium of what constitutes good quality and how to deliver quality healthcare at an affordable price. Further, since insurance laws are constantly changing and these rules affect different payment systems, it makes it even more challenging to maintain the balance of quality and cost. Another challenge Merrild mentioned was transition problems in light of finding it challenging to convert more experienced physicians over to new systems and processes by which health care services are delivered” (Merrild, 2015).
