Some teachers may describe it as controlled chaos. I subscribe to the ideas of authoritative styles in the classroom. In health and physical education class safety is an important aspect. Keeping all students safe is the number one priority in any class where physical activity is required. An authoritative style gives the teacher the ability to place limits and controls on the students while still allowing them to be independent. Many health and physical education teachers agree with the idea of “free play” which basically allows the students to play what they want and determine their own rules within those games. I do not agree with this notion. I want my classroom to be structured in a way that most guarantees my students are learning and experiencing what I want them too. As a health and physical education teacher, I want my lesson plans to emphasize more than just physical activity. I want my students to get the experience of overall wellness. This includes, intellectual, emotional, social, and physical wellness. While physical activity will be a staple in my lesson plans, nutrition, and an emphasis on mental and social well-being will also be included. One major key to me as a teacher is that my students know and understand that I care about them. This idea is portrayed in a humanistic approach to curriculum. I want my students actively making choices within an environment of caring. Assessments in health and physical education class can sometimes be difficult. The majority of my assessments will be divergent. Not all students are equal when it comes to physical abilities. However, effort, attendance, responsibility, and discipline can be assessed. Convergent thinking will be used in my class in the aspects of nutrition and health learning. This form of assessment will be more concrete. The physical setting of a physical education class can be complicated. While the actual classroom may be a bland gym, what happens in that gym and the equipment and materials used, are extremely important. Often times, physical education classes have a lack of money and a shortage of adequate supplies. This puts a major importance on the teacher’s creativity and ability to work with that they have. I want my students to enjoy the materials that we have to the best of their abilities. I am a major advocate for being outside. When the opportunity presents itself, I want several of my classes to take place outside of the gym, in the sun and fresh air. Not only is this beneficial to the students health, but it will also give them a sense of escape from the everyday hassle of their academic curriculum.
