Haywood Patterson: Scottsboro Trial

Improved Essays
Haywood Patterson Is it easier to blame a black man for a rape rather than a white man and get away with it? The answer is yes, that is why the Scottsboro trial lasted so long for Haywood Patterson because the black man was apparently not credible. The court full of white men and women who were prejudice to color, were the only people to judge the truth of a case for an accused black rapist. Going into that courtroom is unimaginable because of the biased jury, how is Haywood Patterson supposed to triumph in the case? Haywood Patterson, a black man, was accused by two prostitutes of rape on a train, showing no sign of rape, and no sign of remorse in court, he is in no way a rapist. Admittedly, Patterson committed a crime by illegally hoboing.

Additionally, in this trial, the implications of an elected versus appointed judge can be seen. Judge Horton did the right thing by overturning the conviction of Haywood Patterson, he did so at great risk. Horton, an elected judge, basically ended his career with this move. It is this situation that leads me to believe that judges should be appointed rather than elected. Not every judge, especially when put in a situation like this, would have the integrity to ignore the political ramifications of their decision.…

In Antonio Beaver, I think his wrongful conviction was most common in that time of period. This is the same as Ronald Cotton whom also was convicted and sentenced for a case of raping a white woman. One of the factors of mismatching the perpetrator is the memory. Memory is not always recalling everything that passed our eyes. Cross-racial identification bias is that people tend to apply more lenient criteria of a different race or ethnicity.…

The case was first heard in Scottsboro Alabama. The trials were rushed, and all of the men (besides twelve-year-old Roy Wright) got sentenced to death. In all of the trials, there were only white juries. So it makes sense why all of the trials went by quick. Without physical evidence, they got sentenced to death.…

The right of due process is one of the most characterizing features that embody the spirit of American liberty. Can anyone imagine a world without constitutional protections, provided for the accused, against arbitrary accusations? Before the establishment of the United States’ Constitution, the founding fathers of America understood that rights inherently bestowed unto the people are rights that should be protected by government institutions. The right against cruel and unusual punishment and the right to a trial by jury are just two of the several protections offered to Americans by the Constitution. In the case Hurst v. State of Florida, Timothy Hurst was charged, convicted, and sentenced to death for the murder of Cynthia Harrison at the…

Slavery was a big issue in the 1800’s. While the United States was split in two between the North and the South, there were states and territories that were designated for slaves and states and territories that were for slaves that wanted freedom. If a slave was to actually make it into one of these “free” states, they were basically considered free unless they were captured or forced back to the slave owner they belonged to. However, while the slaves who made it to these distinct areas were “free”, there were instances where that was simply not the case. One instance that is more prevalent than the others was the case of Dred Scott.…

The way that the Scottsboro trials were handled by the Alabama court system, and the repeated wrongful convictions of the defendants in the face of exonerating evidence, is a prime manifestation of the way that racism worked in the South of the Jim Crow era. Racism is possibly the biggest factor behind the accusation of rape and the mishandling of the case. At the same time however, class differences also provided a motive for some of the actions of the people involved in the case. Ruby Bates and Victoria Price may have found some motivation to accuse the boys to avoid being arrested as hoboes or prostitutes, but once the trials began they were treated better than they had ever been before, and their new, more comfortable life gave them…

In “King Kong and the ‘blonde lady,’” a case in South Carolina, Bennett ends up sentenced to death for stabbing and killing one of his friends. Prosecutor Donald Myers did not go easy on the African American, especially since the jurors were all white which was one simplistic sign of discrimination. When there are no other race jurors except caucasians, it becomes a quick sign of discrimination because it shows no diversity in the one place where everyone should be treated equally. That right there was not the only part of this court case where discrimination occurred. Myers went ahead during Bennett’s conviction and referred to Bennet as “King Kong” and a beast of burden, and also pointed a non-correlation statement saying that Bennett dated a white women.…
