Essay on Author’s Craft: “Marigolds” In “Marigolds,” Eugenia W. Collier uses symbolism to develop the theme that “One cannot have both innocence and compassion(Collier pg 22).” Innocence clouds people of hate, sorrow and pain. “I scrambled to my feet and just stood there and stared at her, and that was the moment when childhood faded and womanhood began. That violent crazy act was the last act of childhood.” This means that in the beginning of the story Lizabeth is innocent but she slowly is becoming more aware of the real world which means that she cannot be innocent anymore.…

It was a hard fought game but the players had fun on the bench and in the locker room and were enjoying what they were playing. The lyrics explain how nothing will get you down and always feel happy.…

I joined my school’s wrestling team during my junior year of high school and went into this new environment with 0 years of prior training and 16 years of “Girls don’t really wrestle”. I was determined to excel during my first wrestling experience to challenge the skepticism that surrounded girl wrestlers. Despite this resolve, I was terrified at the thought of having to actually wrestle someone, so when I found out that my first wrestling match would be against a small, unassuming girl 20 pounds lighter than me, I was relieved. With newfound hope, I went into my match thinking, “How could I possibly lose to someone half my size?”…

In “Losing Is Good for You,” Ashley Merryman argues that constantly rewarding children is an all too common and toxic practice in society that needs to be stopped immediately since it degrades the true merit of winning. She insists that losing is an essential experience that is imperative to the development of children and their impressionable mentalities. Although she claims that losing is good for kids, she recognizes that people should be aware of the intellectual and emotional differences that are unique to each child before administering constructive criticism. According to Merryman, adults should stop assuring children that they are all identical winners because it drives them to underachieve, leads them to devalue the success of winning,…

In the book “Catcher in the Rye”, by J.D Salinger it mentions that "life is a game" but I disagree with that statement because there’s more to life than abiding by rules and success itself. Success shouldn't be measured by the scoreboards results but instead on how you improved.…

Gordon B. Hinckley had once said something along the lines of hard work paying off, if effort is enforced into the work. Over the years I’ve had in high school I have really absorbed the aspect of this, being able to work up and achieve opportunities for the preparation in the outside world. Seventh and eighth grade having to understand the concepts in the athletic sport tennis was hard for me to comprehend. Actually being able to have proper etiquette of holding a tennis racquet was key, but being able to hit a tennis ball was a ‘whole other ball game.’ All two years of playing tennis in middle school I can not remember a single time me nor my tennis partner won a match.…

B. Reason to Listen: It has become a meme to insult the sport of cricket, and rightfully so. Cricket is not popular sport in America, and it will never be accepted as a major sport.…
