Hate Cannot Drive Out Hate, Only Love Can.

Martin Luther King Jr. once said, “Hate cannot drive out hate, only love can.” Mrs. Luella Bates Washington Jones attempts to drive out Rogers wrong actions with love. She treats Roger with empathy, respect, and trusts him. Her sense of justice clearly shows that she believes in correcting people's actions with love rather than hate. After Roger’s failed attempt to steal Mrs. Jones’ purse he is brought back to her house. Not for a punishment as he would assume, but for Mrs. Jones’ attempt to help him better himself and in turn society. She is empathetic towards Roger because of his appearance, “Frail and willow-wild… ‘You ought to be my son. I will teach you right from wrong. Least I can do right now is to wash your face. Are you hungry?”

Since then, Roger has lost the sense of restraint brought on by rules; his savage side has been completely released. E. This change tells us that Roger no longer has any moral conscience to hold him back and refrain him from acting nefariously. He freely embraces his lust for blood and violence without mental penalization, this also indicates that “Roger’s arm,” is no longer, “conditioned by...civilization” (Golding 62). Within the first few moments of the "The Shadow of Hate," it began with a parade of white hooded individuals expressing their hate against other races. Right from the start, I assumed this 40-minute documentary was going to pertain to the KKK, and their reign of terror on African Americans. Movies that related to my assumptions of what this video was going to withhold were; Glory Road, Coach Carter, and Remember the Titans. Prejudice and discrimination between whites and blacks was the major issue in society. But as the video continued, it appeared to display more than just racism between blacks and whites, but all races.…
