Tubman was born into slavery in 1820, in Maryland. After she victoriously escaped from slavery in 1849, she did not run far like many would have thought. Tubman helped lots of slaves escape through what was called the underground railroad. Her service did not stop with slaves. Harriet Tubman was the first female to lead an armed expedition in the Civil War. Although she started as an a cook and nurse, her leadership and fearlessness quickly turned her into a spy and a scout. The expedition she led allowed for 700 slaves to be freed. Harriet Tubman not only bettered the lives of so many women and men, she gave them life. She let them be humans again, and she gave them hope and opportunity. It would be such an honor to all women for her to be on the new $20 bill like the U. S. Treasury Department announced in
