Totalitarian is a system of government that is centralized and dictatorial and requires complete service to the state. This type of government is run by a dictator that controls and has immese power over the state and the people under him. “A totalitarian society is usually ran by a dictator, and there is little to no freedom to the people. In totalitarism, the government controls almost every aspect of life.” (Wolin) Very often we compare and identify totalitarism with communism. She comments on the ‘principle of action’ as the twin criteria of organization. She also comments on the differences between ‘lawful’ and ‘lawless’. “Arendt argues that western political thought has customarily distinguished between ‘lawful’ and ‘lawless’ or ‘constitutional’ and ‘tyrannical’ forms of government.” (Lefort) Arendt says, “The core or all totalitarian governments is fear, or terror.” (line 89) The government uses fear to control and manipulate people into getting them to do what they want when they want to do it. To prove her point Arendt uses two different countries with two different types of government. Those two countries are fascist Germany and communist Russia. Currently, North Korea and China are still ran under a totalitarian government. Both these countries have reports of cases on systematic abuse and unusual punishment. Ultimatly, China and North Korea make it unbearable and miserable to live in either of these countries becasue of the limit on the citizens freedoms. Many have different views on this system of government. Although, the majority would sum it up as a cruel, terrible way to rule and govern a nation. “No one should be told how to live and controlled as much as one is under a totalitarianism government. Every human being should have rights and freedoms.” (Arendt) Lastly, Hannah Arendt describe just how awful it was living in a country under totalitarianism. With these experiences she faced while young, is what influenced her writings and views on this form of government. Basically, as Hannah wrote she brought to light the problems with a totalitarianism
