Haiti has been affected by natural disasters. and loss of natural resources. Heat and electricity is scarce which means foods are difficult to prepare. Cooking is complicated because the loss of resources such as fresh water and crops. Using the solar oven to boil fresh water will help many people cook different meals and support themselves. Boiling the water will kill the bacteria and make the water consumable. The purpose of the invention is to boil water in a short period of time effectively. This method can be used at any time as long as there is sunlight. The leading cause of death in Haiti for adults is Tuberculosis (TB). Haiti has water and sanitizing problems. The purpose of conducting this experiment is to help Haitians have boiled water as a resource for cooking and killing bacteria and so the clean water can be used to bathe. The country of Haiti is about of a third of the island of Hispaniola. Haiti borders the Dominican Republic in the Caribbean Sea. It has a strong historical significance because it was founded by Christopher Columbus in 1492, and the country is known as the poorest country in the Caribbean. It is slightly smaller than Maryland and has a population 10,814,397. Haiti has faced many natural disasters in its history from the infamous 7.0 magnitude earthquake in 2010 that destroyed the capital while taking the lives of over 230,000, followed by the 2010 waterborne Cholera outbreak that killed over 200,000 citizens. In the past six years, Haiti has endured many crisis’. Recently, Tropical Storm Erika did its damage. Haiti suffered casualties of 20 deaths and a massive setback of 20 years in damage. 15 inches of rain deluged the island. After the havoc ceased, Haiti’s mainland was covered more and more events have pushed back damage control and the recovery of the once glorious paradise. Haiti has the highest rate of deforestation in the world with only 20% of forests remaining. The main cause of the lack of forest is from people cutting the trees for human use. The forestry problem has created financial issues in Haiti, as well. Because there are no forests to block mud erosion from running, numerous landslides have occurred.
Recent statistics prove that 55% of people in Haiti are not able to obtain water. Only about 20% of Haitians are able to receive potable water. Haiti is the poorest nation in the western hemisphere. Half of the population in Haiti works for less than one US dollar a day. 40% of Haitians work for less than two U.S. dollars a day. Access to clean, fresh water is the main concern in Haiti because they develop diseases after drinking the non-potable water for so long.
The purpose of this project is to make clean and healthy water for these suffering Haitians. Mainly are trying to see if we can help Haitians drink clean water and bathe in clean water. Also, Haiti is one of the impoverished countries in the world. That is why we are trying to find inexpensive quality items to boil the water. This experiment is being conducted to for a good cause, helping save Haitians from drinking another gallon of dirty water.
