The world has many great architectural marvels from the past that everyone should see and

appreciate. Although it would be wonderful to see some of these marvels, I want to see them when they

were first built rather than the ghost of their former glory. It would be the experience of a lifetime to

see the beauty of such places, and the people who built them. If I could go back in time I would visit

the Hagia Sophia at its very best, the dedication of the church.

The Hagia Sophia, in Istanbul, was once the greatest architectural feat in the Byzantine Empire

and in all of history at the time. Although it is a beautiful building now it was spectacular at the time

It is a spectacle that I wish to see in person. Additionally, the dedication was an exclusive

event that the church leaders would attend. I want to see the church body, along with the church as it

was then, and compare it to how the church and the church body are functioning today. At the

dedication of the Hagia Sophia, I would see the building in its prime and that would be the chance of a

life time.

If I were to go to the dedication of the Hagia Sophia I would see Emperor Justinian I, the greatest

emperor in the history of the Byzantine Empire. He was the one who commissioned the building of the

Hagia Sophia, in 537 AD. After the church burned down in 532 AD, during a riot, Emperor Justinian I

rebuilt it to be the beauty that it is today. Along with the church, Emperor Justinian I rebuilt the

Byzantine Empire to be better than it had ever been after the riots threatened his control. He took back

much of the old Roman Empire from invaders, established the laws for all of the empire, and rebuilt the

empire in the form of public work projects. He is a role-model leader that I would like to see at the

dedication of the Hagia Sophia.

The final reason that I want to see the dedication of the Hagia Sophia would be to see

Perhaps the greatest reminder of Justinian’s power is the Hagia Sophia. Until the creation of St. Peter’s Basilica, Hagia Sophia was the largest domed building ever made. What made this achievement even more significant was that the building had a rectangular base. No one before Justinian had ever made such a large dome; never mind putting it on a quadrilateral base. For this alone Justinian deserves an award, but that is not all.…
