In our society carrying concealed firearms continues to be a major issue. The United States is known for its firearm rights and privileges. These freedoms were granted to us by our Forefathers who established our rights in the constitution when we declared our independence during the Revolutionary War. Throughout the years, our firearm freedoms have evolved in order to fit the needs of our current society. One of these changes is the right to legally conceal a personal firearm. However nothing is more important than learning proper firearm safety. Learning to use a handgun and having the right to carry a handgun are important parts of the safety of the everyday American. Any person would agree with that if they were put into an escalated situation. If a person 's life is threatened, I would just about guarantee that they would wish for a means to defend themselves. Life threatening situations happen without notice or warning. They are moments where a person must think on their feet and act fast. You are not going to wake up thinking “Hey, I’m going to be held at gunpoint today. I better carry my gun.” Carrying a firearm should be an everyday routine, such as brushing your teeth. It should be used as an everyday means of self-defense. Over the last decade or so we have witnessed tragic shootings.

The majority of which have occurred in gun free zones, such as schools, movie theaters and hospitals. The most recent being the mass shooting in Newton, Connecticut and the Aurora theater massacre. The lists could go on. The perpetrators of these events chose places that were heavily populated and were listed as gun-free environments. The sad truth is these places seem to be magnets for unstable individuals with weapons who then inflict their rage on the innocent. Yet most believe the only way to solve this problem is to increase gun control. However evidence shows that almost all tragic shootings over the last decade were the result of individuals who illegally obtained firearms. Gun control only effects law abiding citizens not the criminals who deal and buy guns illegally. There will always be loopholes for people to obtain them regardless of any law short of destroying all firearms. The Gun-Free School Zone Act of 1990 is a federal United States Law that prohibits any unauthorized individual from knowingly possessing a firearm while on any school campus. This limits who can possess a firearm on campus unless they are licensed security or police. I propose they amend this rule and either allow teachers to conceal carry or train a select few in each school to possess a firearm. The reality here is that students at schools without teachers armed and trained with firearms remain unnecessarily vulnerable to fanatics and terrorists. While no solution is foolproof, without an immediate and armed response, an individual with any weapon can murder and inflict bodily harm to children at will. Still, millions of Americans refuse to accept the facts because of their sheer ignorance or lack of information about guns. The result of this makes them irrationally uncomfortable. Most claim it would pose even more of a risk that students would find the gun and possibly use it anyway. However if the gun is carried on the teachers person at all
