When speaking about gun control laws during his presidential campaign senator Marco Rubio declared, “if God forbid, ISIS visits our life, our neighborhood, our school, any part of us, the last thing standing, the last line of defense could very well be our ability to protect ourselves”(should more gun control laws be enacted). With ISIS on the forefront of many US citizens minds the issue of gun control has resurfaced. The issue of gun control is a messy issue with valid arguments on both sides of the debate. The United States should not have stricter policies on gun control but should be enforced because guns allow for self-defense, less violence, and are a person’s unalienable rights.
This country was founded on the ideas that a person has rights that are firmly established in the constitution. Stricter policies are unethical ,because one of those rights includes the right to keep and bear arms. The ability for people to have guns allows for victims to have a fighting chance. A survey done on male felons showed that “34% had been scared off, shot at, wounded, or captured by an armed victim”(what you will find). The same survey found that 40% did not commit a certain crime because they “knew that the victim was carrying a gun” (what you will find). Imagine if those victims that were armed did not have guns. A great many of crimes would have been committed with much more violent and tragic outcomes. When people have guns criminals are less likely to commit that act of violence. One of the main reasons guns are such a controversial topic is that crimes and violence are often associated with guns, but the truth is when citizens are safely armed crime is deterred.
