    1. (Gulliver critiquing his suit made by the Luputian tailor) “ He first took my altitude by a quadrant, and then, with a rule and compasses, described the dimensions and outlines of my whole body, all which he entered upon paper; and in six days brought my clothes very ill made, and quite out of shape, by happening to mistake a figure in the calculation. But my comfort was, that I observed such accidents very frequent, and little regarded. “ I think that this quote is important because it shows how even little ways of doing things are different between the two worlds. Gulliver, had he been making the suit, would have used a measuring tape like most would assume to do.…

Ancient Greece can be traced back to the Stone Age hunters (6000-2900 B.C.); however, Greek culture was much more notable from 1100-146 B.C., and likely had a more profound impact on Western civilization than any other culture. From 1100-750 B.C., a period known as the Dark Ages, Ancient Greece was immersed with wars and invasions and, over time, was divided into small, city states. During the Archaic Period (750-500 B.C.), art, the beginnings of democracy, and the knowledge and understanding of the written language started to re-emerge. The Greeks fought the Persians during the Classical Period (500-336 B.C.) and Athens reached its greatest political and cultural heights, including full development of a democratic plan of government (Document…

What many people don’t realize is how long they want to live for, and the quality of life that they are going to have towards the end. Unfortunately, many people do not live long enough to have the chance to think about this, before it is already happening. In the article, “Why I Hope to Die at 75”, Ezekiel J Emanuel tells the reasons why it is good for the family, friends, and society of the people who die, to pass around the age of 75.…

For this report I interviewed my great grandmother, Margaret Westphal, about the changes she is encountering within each domain throughout late adulthood. Last April she celebrated her 76th birthday and appears to be aging successfully according to John Rowe and Robert Kahn (Boyd & Bee, 2012, p. 462). Rowe and Kahn define successful aging as maintaining physical health, cognitive abilities, being involved in social and productive activities, and being satisfied with life. (Boyd & Bee, 2012, p. 462). When asked questions regarding the physical domain, several things my grandmother mentioned are common changes that occur in late adulthood.…

Plato and Aristotle were ancient Greek philosophers from 400 and 300 B.C.E. Even though they lived in the ancient Greek times, parallels from their beliefs to our current culture can be seen with some deep thought and analysis. In this paper, I will discuss the influence of Plato and Aristotle seen in our culture today. The Myth of the Cave, (Palmer 2013), depicts a story about prisoners chained up in a cave. Their vision was limited to shadows on the wall and gave them a false sense of reality. One prisoner was unchained and forced to look at the real source of the shadows.…

Although externally the Stoics and Cynics appear extremely different from one another, especially in their lifestyle choices, their doctrines share many similarities. Cynicism and Stoicism both agree that a fulfilling life is achieved by seeking self-sufficiency and living in accordance with nature. The main difference between these philosophies is the way that they are applied. Since the Stoics apply these concepts in a more reasonable and less rigid way than the Cynics, Stoicism is a major improvement on Cynicism.…

Long after his voyage to Lilliput, Gulliver speaks of himself as a Lilliputian, though he abandons this perspective once he arrives in Brobdingnag and goes from powerful to powerless. Gulliver becomes increasingly less invested in the perspectives of new islands as he becomes more experienced and jaded towards travel, but by the time that Gulliver reaches the island of Houyhnhnms, he must reexamine his own societal power, as he is neither of the dominant Houyhnhnms class or subservient Yahoos.
