This includes cities like Copan, Yinchuan, Tikal and Palenque. To experience a local aspect of Hispanic culture I visited the Tienda Mexicana La Guadalupana, a grocery store in Chapel Hill. Once inside, the term that came to mind when looking around was bodega. The store was small, but made clear use of its space, with items on the walls, shelves, and even the ceiling. This is in contrast to most “American”, or english speaking, grocery stores I have been to, as they are often wide and spacious, with plenty or room to showcase products. They commonly have bright lights; light, colorful walls; ads and signs everywhere with directions and promotional deals; and music playing over loudspeakers.…
The magnificent structural and architectural remains that still predominate through the forest canopy are testimony to the great achievements made by the Mayan culture in Mesoamerica. The geographic range of the Mayans include portions of the Mexican states ofChiapas and Tabasco, the Yucatan Peninsula, Guatemala, Belize, and the western portions of Honduras and El Salvador (Coe 1966:17). The area in which the ancient Maya lived and modem Maya peoples still inhabit is called Mesoamerica, yet this area is not limited to just Mayan…

Guatemala is one of these countries that seems to consistently face these threats and issues. Guatemala is a low to middle income country located in Latin America. Its inhabitants have faced and dealt with a myriad of diseases, poor political figures, economic crises, and a 36 year long civil war. Guatemalans battle with issues surrounding alcoholism, lack of education, specifically sexual education, extreme malnutrition and stunting, rape, HIV/AIDs, extreme poverty, ethnic divides and poor sanitation.…
"Paraguay is a small landlocked country near the center of South America. It shares borders with Argentina, Bolivia, and Brazil. The Paraguay River divides the country into two different land regions. West of the river lies the Chaco, a flat, thinly settled area of coarse grasses, scrub forests, and salt marshes. Eastern Paraguay, east of the river, has rolling hills, fertile soil, and forests" (Lambert 144).…

Guatemala doesn’t really start until 1523. This year dates the time the spanish adventurer Pedro de Alvarado defeats the indigenous Maya and turns Guatemala into a Spanish colony. Due to earthquakes, the capital was never really made until 1776 at Guatemala City. From 1524 to 1821, Guatemala was the center of government for the captaincy general. It was an agricultural and pastoral area where Amerindian labor served a colonial landed aristocracy.…

September 10, the day of the hurricane, is also a national holiday for British Honduras, on which many locals gather in the streets to celebrate the defeat of Spanish conquerors by the British in 1798.[6] It is widely believed that the hurricane struck without any warning, although some recent historians have disputed this. In his column for The Belize Times on September 5, 2004, Emory King claimed that Belizean authorities withheld continuous warnings from U.S. ships in the region of a possible hurricane strike on British Honduras so the festivities would not be interrupted.[7] King cited as evidence a letter dated September 24, 1931, from a local radio operator to the Colonial Secretary in which the warnings were discussed, adding that "perhaps none of [the authorities] had ever been in a hurricane and didn't know exactly how bad it was going to be."[8 ] Additionally, there was also belief among residents of Belize City that the reefs would provide a barrier against large tidal waves.[9] Storm surge, abnormally high tides, and strong winds resulted in severe damage and many deaths in Belize City.…
The cultural group that I chose would be latin Americans. Latin America generally includes those parts of the Americas where Spanish, French or Portuguese prevail: Mexico, most of Central America, and South America. There is also an important Latin American cultural presence in the United States. The increase in immigration due to more convenient methods of transportation and communication means that modern societies will have to deal with new realities. The new realities that they will have to deal with is the formation of culturally diverse communities.…
