In the same way, Doris Lessing, the author of “Group MInds,” presents a similar view when describing the influence of group mind. Lessing believes that we need to guard against the influence of group mind and that we need to make ourselves aware of these influences. The majority of the group was instructed on how to behave during the experiment while only a few are unaware of the true purpose of the experiment. The people in the group who did not receive instructions say that the pieces of woods are not the same despite the fact that one is clearly shorter. She feels that going along with a group was a consistent pattern and that it was hard for them to stand against the group. We are sometimes embarrassed and ashamed of the times we didn't speak out against a group. She seems to say that we need to acknowledge the influences rather than be emotional. We can't feel regret but we can try to prevent it from happening. Along the same lines, Lessing describes that people have different opinion but it’s hard for them to share it when speaking out against a group because they might get judged. She states ”People who have experienced a lot of groups, who perhaps have observed their own behavior, may agree that the hardest thing in the world is to stand against one’s group, a group of one’s peers” (Lessing, 1985, P.2).
