The Gray WolfOver the years many animals have been added onto the Endangered Species Act (ESA), the Gray Wolf is just one of many animals that are protected by the ESA and the population is struggling to survive and we should do whatever we can to help the population thrive because they help our environment in many ways. Many people see Gray Wolves as predators and that they don’t do a lot but hunt for prey, yet Gray Wolves actually help keep certain animal populations down and from overpopulating. Gray wolves eat animals such as elk, deer, rabbit, and caribou. By the wolves eating these animals it helps our environment by keeping them from overpopulating. As their prey gets eaten they leave behind the bone or whatever else the wolves do not eat on the ground. A study found that the nitrogen levels went up and more nutrients were added to the soil and kept the ground healthy. Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) is a disease that is found in the deer family and leads to death. Members of the deer family lose weight chronically and it eventually leads to them dying. Earlier on it was stated that wolves prey on deer and elk, by the wolves preying on these animals it reduces the spread of CWD to other locations and animals. Wolves are believed to be the natural solution to CWD since there is no actual cure. Scientists believe that taking off their status as an endangered species will be too early and the wolf population will go right back to extinction.Wolves are endangered because of humans and how they react to seeing a wolf. Many people thought wolves were dangerous to humans and killed many of them. In 1850 to 1900 was when more than 1,000,000 were killed. In 1907 there were so little wolves left that they were on the verge of extinction. Now as the population is coming back the conflict is rising once again.
