Because of its secluded position, Japan did not become more modern until the late nineteenth century. At this point they received firearms, and the shogunate was disbanded in favor of an imperial government.
Both Great Britain and Japan are island nations and rely on imports for goods that are not found in their borders, while Japan maintained an isolationist policy, Great Britain traded and colonized around the globe. (doc.5) (doc.6)

The Seven Years War was a conflict between many European powers, involving two major groups, Great Britain Prussia, Portugal, Hanover, and other small German states on one side. In the early 1750s French expansion into territories the British wanted such as the Ohio River Valley for economic gain caused many armed conflicts lading to The Seven Years War. (doc.2) With The Kingdom of France, Austrian-led Holy Roman Empire, the Russian Empire, Bourbon Spain, and Sweden on the other side.
The Russo-Japanese War was fought between the Russian Empire and the Empire of Japan over rival imperial ambitions in Manchuria and Korea. Fighting over iron and other natural resources, Russia and Japan would eventually be forced to sign a treaty. Russia was humilated, Japan felt deprived of its assured victory.
