For starters, towards the beginning of the memoir Beah and his friends are off to Mattru Jong to rap in a talent show. The boys, “(Had) loaded (their) backpacks…Since (they) intended to return the next day, (they) didn’t say goodbye or tell anyone where (they) were going”(7). Here, Beah aluminates figurative language by foreshadowing his future. Beah sheds lights upon the reader to infer how he left home with only a backpack and the clothes on his back. In effect of not saying goodbye to anyone it foreshadows the boy’s fate on leaving home to never return. In comparison, to the foreshadowing of the boys fate up above about never returning. The boys were also torn away from their families but Beah heard news that they were in a village not far from him. As Beah travels to the near village an obstacle comes in his way where Beah and his friends help an elder man carry bananas. By helping the elder an attack is then put on the village where Beahs family stays. When Beah reaches the burnt village, “(He) kept kicking and punching as they dragged (him) out”(95). For this purpose, Beah points out the irony he is faced with creating an emotional feeling for the readers. Beah encounters himself with mixed emotions because having been so close to seeing his family once again but then having his faith crushed.
