Fore! THWACK! A golf swing can be heard from hundreds of feet away. This man just used 17 different muscle groups in his arms, legs, and abdomen--but is he playing a sport? Golf: sport, or just a hobby? Of course, many people would say either one. And, truly, there is only one answer. Golf is as much of a sport as basketball and baseball are. A sport, by definition on Dictionary.com, is “an athletic activity requiring skill or physical prowess and often of a competitive nature.” Therefore, golf can be considered a sport. To golf well takes practiced skill and determination. Also, most of the time people go out with friends or family to play golf and see who can get the better score. So yes, golf is a sport because it “requires skill” and is “often of competitive nature.” …show more content…
The British Medical Journal found that swinging a golf club uses muscles in the hands, wrists, arms, abdomen, and legs all at once. Mytpi.com, a website that studies golfers in order to find out the best way to swing a golf club, says that golfers use the butt, chest and forearms as well. Golf requires extremely rigorous physical activity, meaning that it can fall into the sports category instead of being just a hobby. Moreover, if golf wasn’t a sport, why would huge sporting goods companies like Nike and Under Armour sell golf apparel and equipment? Not only do these sporting goods manufacturers consider golf a sport, but so do many sports agents and sponsor. Even the Olympics thinks that golf is a sport! In 2016, golf returned to the Olympics after 112 years. The Olympics, known as “a modern international sports competition” on Dictionary.com, clearly considers golf a sport, and so should everyone
