Goal #1: Focus less the specific the grade of an assignment and more on understanding the concepts of the material.
Why? When focusing on only getting a specific grade it does not help me understand the content. It only creates stress and can make an assignment feel like a chore instead of an opportunity to learn and understand and display the content I have learned. In the reading it discusses how putting in the hours into an assignment is not the same as understanding it. (176) I also need to accomplish this goal of letting grades go because in the long run it will help me do better. It will help with first understanding the material better and then do better because I am understanding instead of thinking about how to get a specific grade.

By striving for intellectual humility it will prevent me from being closed off or stubborn towards new ideas or ways of understanding information, which is important to see a bigger picture of society. It will help me achieve the first goal of understanding being the focus because by being open towards topics I do not understand. This practice of intellectual humility will allow me to engage and expand my learning. In the reading it talks about how social sciences can be seen as subjective and because of this it can be easier to question facts. (167) Since it can be seen as easier to question the subject matter of this course I need to strive for intellectual humility to learn as much as possible in the course.
How will I achieve this goal? I will keep my mind open to ideas that I may not agree with and I will not allow my own perspective or knowledge to get in the way of looking at new ideas that can be used to build my knowledge and learning. I will keep a journal to list the information I do not understand and with the journal I will focus on the information I do not know to learn more about it.
Goal # 3 To learn from my reactions of subject material that bothers me or that I did not have much knowledge of

It is this way because as a woman I can understand the oppressiveness of the issue, but at the same time I am a white woman so my experience of sexism is vastly different and I may not see it the same way as a women of a different race. I also feel that the issue of gender may bring up feelings of my own internalized oppression and cause me to disengage. My plan to keep myself from disengaging with the course through the discussion of the issue of gender is to self reflect on my uncomfortable feelings through writing them down. I will then work through why specifically I feel this way and then finally read more about the topic to learn from my feelings in a positive

Today, the high speed development of Internet technology allows people to obtain knowledge more conveniently than any previous age. The plentiful methods in getting knowledge cause some people to doubt the functions of the college, and claim that the college is already not the best place in nurturing intellectuals. Gerald Graff expresses the similar idea depending on his childhood’s experience in “Hidden intellectualism”, and claims the “street smarts” can provide more benefits than “book smart” which we learn in the college. I would argue that the college is still the best place for students become intellectuals because of the unique benefits such as the open academic environment, professional lectures, and complete academic services.…

Journal Assignment Two: Gender Norms in Your Life This course as a whole has opened my eyes to realize how much our gender plays into the decisions and actions we make every day. I take advantage that doing gender, for me specifically, isn’t an ongoing struggle that it can be for those that do not fit directly into the gender binary. Doing gender is referring to how we behave and interact with others based upon socially constructed expectations for each gender. Instead of being an individual and behaving in the way we would like, we always have to consider if what we are doing is what society believes would be appropriate or reasonable for a female or male.…

    Essay On Sexism

In our society today, there are still many techniques of discrimination that one would think had been eradicated years ago. One of these techniques is sexism, which is the act of prejudice, stereotyping, and/or intolerance on the basis of gender. Sexism has taken control over the way people think and it affects the job industry, government decisions, the media, and unfortunately, education. Children begin to experience sexism at a young age, typically in elementary school. An example of a subliminal sexist message that they might experience would be a teacher scolding a female student for acting in an unorthodox fashion that does not fit the ‘calm, respectful, and neat’ stereotype for girls, but then excusing the same actions of a male student, using the overused, disgusting statement ‘boys will be boys.’…

Growing up, I never felt segregated based on my gender. I was always treated the same and given the same options as the boys were. It wasn’t until later in high school and college where I started noticing gender differences within society. The “glass ceiling” was clearly evident in the business world, but I’m not fully exposed to that, being that I’m still in school. The history of gender inequality, on the other hand, was something I was completely unfamiliar with.…
