Many Americans are struggling with new laws that have been created to protect the LGBTQ community. In recent years, many states have passed the law for same sex marriage. As well as laws to protect transgenders from discrimination. Regardless of the new laws, the LGBTQ community continues to fight for equality.
The case of Gloucester County School Board v. G.G. is the first transgender case to reach the Supreme Court. Gavin Grimm (G.G.) made headlines because of the discrimination he experienced at his high school. He is a transgender male born female struggling to overcome many obstacles, that have been thrown his way. Gavin began having problems at school when he decided to identify as a male and use the boy’s restroom. He didn’t understand

Gavin and his mother spoke with the school prior to the new school year, to reinsure he would be treated fairly. Things changed once the parents of students that attend school with Gavin, were notified of his transition. Parents became outraged and demanded the School Board to do something about it. According to Zachary Schurin “parents asked the school board to enforce students to use the restroom and locker room to correspond to their biological sex.” I think it is dangerous for G.G. to use the restroom of the sex he no longer identifies by. It puts him at risk for mental and physical abuse from his peers. That is how the lawsuit came about, because he was no longer allowed to use the boy’s restroom. His lawsuit is premised on claims based on Title IX of the education Amendments Act of 1972 and the Equal Protection Clause of the US Constitution according to …show more content…
It is unfortunate that he must endure this pain while finishing up his last years in high school. He shouldn’t have to suffer for the way he feels and or the way he was born. People need to be more open to change, and learn to accept people for who they are. As America continues to evolve, we as Americans need to as well. It seems as if the people that are fighting to block his rights, aren’t thinking about the challenges this young man must encounter. The backlash that Gavin is experiencing is inhumane. No one seems to care about the pain he is enduring, and fail to realize that it is a form of bullying. Bullying which can lead to bigger issues like suicide, and or force him to drop out of school. According to Zachary Schurin “Gavin suffers from gender dysphoria, a psychological condition recognized under the DSm-5 that is characterized by significant distress caused by the incongruence between one’s gender identity and their biological defined sex.” He is already struggling to accept himself; he doesn’t need to fight the world as

After reading the passage “When Women Become Men at Wellesley,” by Ruth Padawer I came to conclusion that transgender students should be allowed to get an education in a same-sex institution like Wellesley College because these students are or were identified as women once in their lifetime. In institutions like these is what they require to be accepted to their education system, something to proof that they are a woman; if that is a problem title IX is there to be used for the help against gender discrimination. Although same-sex institution lose their identity by admitting women in the transition of becoming a man, these campuses offer equality for all the students. But sometimes they can run in conflicts like one Timothy came across while…

In addition, instructional materials and activities that are taught or seen around the school should not exclude, ridicule, or victimize against any student based on sexual preference or sexual identification. Principals should also prepare for meeting with nontraditional families and ensure inclusion of the school community members as well. Including more gender-neutral language is another change that has impacted instructors since not adhering or accepting the new social structure of homogeneity can be considered an unlawful defilement of their identity. With that said, by allowing a…

You would think the principal of all people would be the most accepting. In this case we see that this is not true. It's mind boggling that a principal would even say such a thing. The job of a principal is to protect the students that attend their school. Another thing that was said by Jamie’s principal was, “If he doesn’t want to be bullied, then he shouldn’t be so openly gay.”…

Throughout history, people who identify as transgender have not been properly welcomed across the world, being that it is not introduced by parents and mentors. However, over the past couple years, people have been trying to embrace the change that people bring to themselves and their peers. Although there are many supporters that appreciate transgender lifestyles and respect what they go through, a lot of people were raised to reject change and lash out at the people who undergo it by passing laws that limit them and rules that take away their freedom and confidence. How does sexual discrimination affect people who identify as transgender? When people say or do hurtful things to purposely bring down transgender individuals it can sometimes…

While the LGBT+, especially the trans, community still has a long way to go in terms of equality, there have been major strides in the right direction. In 2004, Massachusetts becomes the first law to legalize same-sex marriage and give straight and gay couples the same marriage rights under the law. In 2010, Don’t Ask Don’t Tell is repealed and in 2011, President Obama states that his administration will no longer defend DOMA. This comes into fruition in June of 2015 when the Supreme Court found the ban of same-sex marriage unconstitutional. There have been LGBTQ+ Pride parades and major support systems in the youth for those who come from unsupportive families.…

Although gender identity rights remain a controversial subject, I lean towards the side that desired the Supreme Court to hear Gavin Grimm’s case. In my humble opinion, I believe a person can achieve anything they desire, and that a person can be whomever they aspire to be. Transgenders are included, they feel very strongly about this issue and fight for who they are. It appears the government is treating people with gender identity issues just as colored people were treated in the past. Sadly, they are discriminating against them and not giving them the same rights as everyone else; they should not be required to fight for them.…

Transgender Bathrooms - The Current Fight for Equality With the new law in North Carolina stating that you can only use public restrooms that match your birth gender, the public has now latched onto a national debate of whether or not trans people can use the bathroom they identify with. This topic is being hotly discussed as the fear of rape and assault is commonly brought up to as why these sort of laws make sense. In this day and age, this is just another battle for equality. Finally, a teacher of Berkeley County School District, choosing to remain anonymous, also supports bathroom policies that restrict transgender individuals to using the bathroom that matches their biological identity. She feels that it is necessary in order to protect both student and staff member’s health and safety in schools (personal communication, May 23, 2016). “Students have a lot of pressure to contend with in high school. It is therefore unnecessary for students to have to worry about added dangers in a place whose primary responsibility is to protect” (personal communication, May 23,…

As times are changing, educators are seeing more and more transgender students in their classrooms and communities. These students are often ostracized from social groups and sometimes even their families, however, some transgender students have strong ties with their trans community and even with their friends they have grown up with. Each student situation is unique, which is why these young adolescents need role models in their lives and who better than a transgender teacher. The Huffington Post’s article explains the hardships and stories of two transgender teachers, Bahar Akurtlu, a second-year Math teacher in Harlem, and Sam Long, an educator in Denver. Both teachers have rather different stories to share, but they share one commonality,…

I agree with the parents’ decision of allowing Tyler to be a boy, if my daughter way diagnose with gender identity disorder; I would want him to be happy. Parents should be a child's number one support, helping them feel loved being who they truly want to be. I believe that gender identity disorder can be diagnosed at a young age, many kids have been struggling with GID for all their life, and felt like something was wrong with them. This generation is lucky that the phrase transgender is more known now, a decade ago transgender was barley known by us; making many kids feel broken, and not like other kids. I don’t see what’s so bad about allowing your child to be the opposite gender, even though it said in the article that 80% of them change…

We have many bathrooms in our school for either just men or women, I believe we could just give up one of these to make transgender students feel safer. Ultimately, it will be up to states and public schools to decide, but they must address this issue now. We can not leave this issue for future generations or wait until someone gets hurt. We must act now on this…

Conformists to the idea of unisex bathrooms don’t want them to be in the public eye or around the traditional bathrooms. The Gay Straight Alliance (GSA) club in Wahconah Regional High School felt that the transgender and gender non-conforming students of Wahconah were feeling targeted for wanting to use the bathroom that they prefer. Consequently, in the school year of 2015-2016, the school changed two of their bathrooms to be gender neutral. A safe alternative to using the standard restrooms would have been to have gender neutral bathrooms located in the school. In Wahconah, the best location for these new bathrooms was determined to be in the music hallway, or G hall.…

There are laws that a for the LGBT community and there are laws against the LGBT community. When one law is made there is always a new one to repel the old ones. Some laws such as the Defense of Marriage Act in 1996 lets the government treat same sex couples like they are not even married. Other laws make same sex couples pay heavy taxes and same sex couples are not allowed to have marriage benefits like opposite sex couples. An example of these taxes is about “Windsor [who] got bitter news later in the form of federal and New York estate tax bills totaling $600,000 that would not have been levied on an opposite-sex couple” (Jost).…
