Global Warming In The Boston Marathon

Primack (2013) led a study that shows the effects of warming temperatures on winning times in the Boston Marathon. He and his three co-authors, Dr. Abe Miller Rushing, Dr. Nathan Phillips and Dr. Robert Kaufmann, examined the timing of the Boston Marathon runners from the years 1933 to 2004. They found that when warmer temperatures and headwinds occurred the day of the race, the runners were indeed slowed down. The reasoning for this research was to further their focus on climate change from birds and plants to including how the warming climate had an effect on long-distance running. There is also a trend that shows how winning times in events such as marathons have improved throughout the centuries. Should the Earth’s climate get as warm as climate models predict, then the trend might slow down or even reverse. …show more content…
The weather data specifically comprised of temperature, wind direction, wind speed, humidity, wind chill, sky cover and precipitation. Until 2005, the race began at 12:00pm. Every year until April 1969, the race was ran on the 19th of the month. After 1969, it was changed to the third Monday in April ranging from dates April 15th to April 21st. In order to read the data easier, they converted the wind direction as well as the speed into a single variable that had information on head and tail winds. With the wind, they had two component vectors: one that ran parallel to the race course and one perpendicular although they only used the component parallel to the course since it had the chance to show a greater effect on running speed. In addition to this, they used the separate components of wet bulb globe temperature (temperature, humidity and solar radiation). This allowed them to examine how the warming temperature affected the winning

Lost of lives were lost this day because of a terrorists, DzhokarTsarnaev and TamerlanTsarnaev. The photographer, Dan Lamparlello, caught a perfectly timed photo of the bomb going off. As the powerful Colorado River churned beneath me, as it has for centuries, and the relentless sun peaked over the top of the North Rim, I could not help but feel astounded. I was in a timeless place: a place disconnected from the society I had left behind miles ago. Down here, in the lowest section of the Grand Canyon, it was just me, my friends, and the heat. Always the heat. We had started our journey, a run from the Grand Canyon’s North Rim to the South Rim, at 4 AM in a futile attempt to avoid the skyrocketing temperature and finish before the sun became the determining factor in the success of our venture.…

“It was a such pretty day that day, it was a really picture perfect sky, blue skies, the marathon feeling is that everybody is really upbeat and excited,” said Melinda Arredondo, when describing the 117th Boston Marathon on April 15th of 2013. Carlos and Melinda Arredondo stood at the finish line of the marathon with 400 small American flags to hand out to finished runners in honor of their two sons, Alex and Brian, who had passed away. Alex Arredondo was killed in a sniper attack in Iraq at 20 years old while serving for the United States in 2004 and just a few years later, Brian Arredondo, committed suicide from his struggle with grief. To Carlos and Melinda not only did these flags represented their national pride, but also the love and strength of their family, which they wanted to see spread all over the finish line of the Boston Marathon. But, just as Carlos stood fidgeting with his last flag, contemplating how to best honor his country and sons with this flag, he heard a thunderous boom, and the beaming spirits of Boston were instantaneously camouflaged with smoke.…

As greenhouse gases increases and global temperature rises at an exponential rate, scientists inevitably raises their concerns all over the world. Unfortunately, there seems to be substantial evidence to suggest global warming will completely transform the world as we know it in an abhorrent way. Several concerning outcomes that’s expected from global warming are rising sea level, limited location for agricultural growth, and increased number of hurricanes, tornadoes, and droughts. Specifically, California will experience three times as many heat-related deaths in cities, 10% surge in electricity demand, 55% increase in large wildfire frequency, and twice as many drought years. It should be evident that global warming only begins as an environmental issue, however, over time the issue will transform into an economic behemoth of a problem.…

Benjamin Franklin shared a wise piece of information many years ago when he said, “Think of these things: whence you came, where you are going, and to whom you must account.” Although these words with published in Poor Richard’s Almanac nearly three hundred years ago, they can still resonate with the reader just as much as in 1732. In one sentence, Franklin teaches a great life lesson that is still applicable today. Never forgetting where one came from, keeping an eye on their destination, and considering who they answer to is a crucial part of leading a life of integrity.…
