I always saw those with mental illnesses as completely crazy or messed up in the head. I believed they didn’t think or feel the same way that someone without a mental disorder would. Those with mental disorders are thought to have a brick wall up between them and civilization. Kaysen’s Girl Interrupted easily changed my views on people whom have these mental illnesses. As Kaysen said she believed people with mental illnesses were “abnormal and weird”, how could she? The stigma surrounding mental diseases shows that these people are not “abnormal and weird” they appear to be normal human beings. Kaysen was a normal teenager like any other 18-year-old, she was ultimately trying to be like everyone else. People with mental disorders want nothing more than to fit in like the rest of us. Those with these illnesses want what everyone else their age wants – to be accepted! Kaysen enjoyed doing activities like all other teenagers such as; “going to the movies, hanging out with her friends, and shopping.” Kaysen and the other females in McLean were like any typical teenager girls when it came to boys. On numerous occasions they talked about boys and going out (even though they couldn’t without nurse’s supervision). They discussed the little things like what they were going to wear to their dentist appointments. We learn that they have feelings just like each of us. As well
