As I have critically reviewed and discussed the principles involved in the person-centred approach to dementia and other common geriatric health condition’s care, with reference to individuality; rights; choice; privacy; independence; dignity; respect; and autonomy, I have come up with the following discussions or deliberations:
Person-centred approach comprises of elements which are generally expressed and described, firstly, as a value based that stresses on the straight out value of all human lives regardless of age or mental ability. It means that, with the utilisation of person centred approach, all individuals are treated equally. Individuality is achieved by taking a thorough study on the background or history of an individual’s past interests, hobbies, and jobs – details or information that can only be gotten from the individual’s phenomenal field. This means that there is no single archive that can be used as the source of such information. Therefore, the person-centred approach allows analysis of care to take place to an individual – suffering from dementia and/or other geriatric health conditions – and brings out reliable information that cannot be based on another individual’s background or history.
Then there are rights. Rights give emphasis on personhood set value based on the individual’s moral worth and his entitlement to any rights regardless of degree of his mental challenge, if he has. This certainly connotes that rights are rights. Rights are made for all individuals without exceptions. When giving or providing care to an individual – suffering from dementia and/or other geriatric health conditions – the person-centred approach gives considerations to his prevailing rights.
