George W. Veditz and his contribution towards the Deaf Community

Abstract For my writing assignment, I choose George W. Veditz. It’s because I have read about him in my CDDS class and he is truly and inspiration. Through this research paper, I can learn more about him and his extraordinary works for the deaf community. I have used various websites to research on my topic and know more about his work and how he did it.
He is regarded as a visionary leader by Gallaudet University, who became deaf at the age of 8 due to scarlet fever (Gallaudet University , 2014). Also, he has contributed to the deaf community by preserving and developing …show more content…
It was an ear where films were gaining a lot of popularity among people. He made movies that covered deaf history, American patriotism, and religion. He could make 18 films from 1913-1920. (Hamilton, n.d.). The way his films were made were different. They were made by pointing at a stable camera at signers and they would lecture to it. They also had to make sure that the signs were large and slow for everyone to see them because during that time only black and white pictures were produced and they didn’t have the proper resolution. These films were then passed on to local deaf clubs within the united states. These clubs would then showcase these movies to the deaf people, who would gather to watch them. It served both as a source of entertainment and knowledge.
One of his famous work was “The preservation of sign language”. He used biblical passages in his speeches to give an emotional touch. He also used finger spelling to communicate with the audience so that his gestures could be translated into English where they had interpreters. (Hamilton, …show more content…
Despite being deaf, he came out as a successful leader and mentor of all the deaf people. His contribution leaves a very strong message that nothing in impossible in life and if you have a will to do something then nothing can stop you from achieving it. Though there are myths that still exist related to deaf people. But as long as deaf people continue to do achieve success in their lives, then that day is not far when people will forget all the myths related to them and have a huge respect for
