Genetically Modified Organisms Persuasive Essay

Genetically modified organisms have been a very controversial topic since technology has advanced and the demand for special kinds of food has been greater than ever. A genetically modified organism is an organism such as a plant, animal, yeast, or bacteria that has been genetically altered then matured in a lab. When organisms are genetically altered, the DNA added could make the the organism stronger, more nutritious, be able to withstand dry and salty environments, or even made into medicine. (Biology: Changing Life, 2007, p. 439) GM food production has increased rapidly in the US over the past few years but not so much in other countries such as ones in Europe. These countries do not see the benefit in the “Frankenfoods” and feel as if they should not even be an option for food buyers. (“Are Genetically Modified”, 2008) There really shouldn’t be anything against these organisms, for they have done many great things to our planet. One in eight people in the 7 billion that live on this planet do not have enough to eat. When done safely, modifying organisms can create a surplus in food that can help us feed the malnourished and hungry in struggling countries. (“Are Genetically Modified”, 2008) For example, many farmers grow their plants from genetically modified plants of that same species to create more plants that are also stronger. These extra plants could be used to feed more people and the stronger plants can reduce the amount of food that goes to waste. This cost-effective and clever way to get an increase in food will not end world hunger completely, but will help to move towards that goal. (“Genetically Modified Foods”,
