The effects of social class can be felt anywhere. Almost every aspect of society is influenced in some manner by social class. Stephen was considered to be brought up in a high class family so he would have been affected by factors that are influenced by high class upbringing. Physically, Stephens’s social class would have had an influence on his health. Stephen was brought up in a high class family therefore his parents will have been more likely to check he has cleaned his teeth and so on when he was growing up. Also, he would be more inclined to be involved with sports such as been part of a football team as the parents will have more knowledge about staying fit and healthy. Intellectually, Stephen was naturally intelligent however, as his parents were very successful themselves he would have been more likely to develop further education this is because the parents will be motivating as would too want then to follow their role and become successful. Further education is also something that costs and the support with money is a something that is needed when going onto university as they are higher class they are more likely to be able to afford some of the fees. Stephen will also want to develop totally new intellectual skills that cost for example driving. If Stephens mum had consumed little or a lot alcohol while pregnant with Stephen this could have effected Stephens PIES needs. When a pregnant woman drinks it is passed through the umbilical cord to her child. Unlike adults, our liver can break down the alcohol whereas Stephens little body wouldn’t of been able to do this. If the mother drinks too much alcohol during pregnancy it can permanently damage Stephen’s developing cells. This could affect how Stephens face, organs and brain grow.
Physically, if Stephens’s mother had consumed alcohol this could have leaded Stephen to have serious health conditions, such as fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD). It's called a spectrum because the problems can range from mild learning difficulties, through to birth defects. Heavy drinking can also cause problems with pregnancy, such as miscarriage and premature birth (BMA 2007: 2; 9). Too much alcohol can even increase the risk of Stephen being stillborn (RCOG 2006a). They can have short term effects such as low birth weight.
