Jurassic Park: Movie Analysis

The film Jurassic Park is a film that takes place on an island in the Caribbean Ocean where the main inhabitants are various reproduced dinosaur species. Paleontologist Dr. Alan Grant, Dr. Ellie Sattler and mathematician Ian Malcolm are invited to the island by the owner of Jurassic Park, John Hammond, and his lawyer Donald Gerraro to confirm that the island is safe for public interaction. Hammond’s grandchildren are also invited to view the island. On this island, researchers who work for Hammond’s biotechnology company have genetically engineered dinosaurs using DNA extracted from the blood within a mosquito that was trapped in amber. The extracted DNA, then was inserted into frog egg cells for the dinosaurs to be reproduced. To prevent any uncontrolled reproduction of these dinosaurs on the island, they have been strategically engineered to all be female. While they are hesitant to the ideas of re-creating dinosaurs, Grant, Sattler and Malcolm continue on their tour of the island and its facilities. As they tour the island, an employee of Jurassic Park, Dennis, disrupted the park’s security system to steal dinosaur embryos to sell off to a rival company. In doing so, the power on the island was lost which allowed for many of the dinosaurs to roam free since the electrical fences keeping them at bay were nonfunctional. In their quest to get off the island, the characters had to fight against a Tyrannosaurus Rex and Raptors just to turn on the island’s power and security defenses. What was discovered while they were trying to survive was that there were broken dinosaur eggshells. Due to the fact that frogs can alter their sex in a single sex environment, the dinosaurs that have been infused with frog DNA have this trait allowing them to reproduce. Ultimately, Hammond, his guests, and his grandchildren were able to restore power and the security defenses on the island and nearly escape deaths. While very entertaining and informative about the general aspects of genetic engineering, Jurassic Park had various errors in the biological concepts that were incorporated into the film. These fallacies include the ability to extract viable dinosaur DNA from a mosquito trapped in amber, conducting somatic cell nuclear transfer cloning of dinosaurs with the use of frog eggs, and conducting transgenic cloning with closely related species. Before these fallacies can be analyzed, the concepts such as gene cloning, somatic nuclear transfer, and transgenic cloning that surround the biology that took place in the film must be discussed at length. Genetic cloning is a concept in which a specific gene that codes for s specific protein is located on a specific DNA sequence from an organism and is to be replicated. To complete this process, the DNA sequence that possesses the gene that is to be copied …show more content…
To do this, the donor egg cell must have its nucleus and DNA extracted. The nucleus from a somatic cell is then inserted into the donor egg of another organism. The somatic cell nucleus and the egg cell "develop into an embryo and is then implanted into a surrogate mother" (Genetic Science Learning Center 2014).The purpose for this is so that the somatic cell will provide the two chromosome copies that the developing embryo will have. In the case of the movie Jurassic Park, the somatic cell nuclear transfer cloning that occurred in the film was applied with transgenic cloning. Transgenic cloning refers to the process in which an organism is genetically engineered to produce a specific protein or express specific traits from inserted DNA. This is done using the processes of gene cloning and somatic cell nuclear transfer as referenced earlier. The specified gene is isolated and combined with bacterial plasmids and restriction enzymes and is further replicated in bacterial colonies creating recombinant DNA. This recombinant DNA is then extracted from the colonies and is then inserted into a fertilized egg cell, via the process of the somatic cell nuclear transfer. In regards to transgenic cloning, fertilized egg cells where the desired DNA is to be …show more content…
Whether it was replicating dinosaur DNA extracted from a mosquito trapped in amber to using frog eggs to produce the dinosaurs, the biological concepts in this movie were rooted in fact but how they were applied were merely a work of

In conclusion, the latest film ‘Dawn of the Planet of the Apes’ (2014) has advanced in motion picture (CGI), which made the film more realistic and fitted into pop culture. It also captured audience’s eyes in some scenes and brought to light modern society conditions relating to human corruptions. The original ‘Planet of the Apes’ (1968) script structure was not creditable and lost interest throughout the storyline, such as visual effects (CGI) and lack of performance, which lead to a parody genre film rather then being a serious science fiction genre film. There were also some unneeded characters and other storytelling methods to present the narrative because it bored the audience and made it more of a Mockumentary. The twist conflict at the…

"Monster is a relative word; to a canary, a cat is a monster. So far we humans were used to being cats." After the first three movies in the series, you might think that they would have learnt of their incapacity to contain a dinosaur – precisely the reason why Jurassic Park was shut down at the end of the third movie. Twenty-two years later, the park has been reopened, renamed and revamped. The theme park, dubbed Jurassic World, is now owned by Simon Masrani (Irrfan Khan) who has taken Hammond's dream of a dinosaur amusement park to a whole new level.…

Michael Crichton wrote the original “Jurassic Park” and Steven Spielberg captivated us with the 1993 Blockbuster that has turned into an impeccable franchise (Anderson, 2015). At ten years old, I merely went to see the movie a dozen times before my parents no longer would give into my paleontology obsession. “No one’s impressed by a dinosaur anymore,” are the lines expressed by park manager, Claire, in “Jurassic World” (Anderson, 2015). The franchise has spawned a mega-brand that has like any other, experienced highs and lows. Did I mention “Jurassic World” was just named the #3 highest-grossing film of all time, by Newsday (2015).…

Jurassic Park Analysis In Michael Crichton’s novel “Jurassic Park”, he focuses a lot on what we, as readers, distinct the difference of what is natural, and what is artificial. He uses the idea of scientifically bringing back extinct dinosaurs, and creating a zoo for these reptiles. This fictional idea of bringing back prehistoric animals traps us in wondering the big question. Are these dinosaurs actually real, or are they just artificial beings used for science, and entertainment?…

Watching Raiders of the Lost Ark from around the three-minute mark till about thirteen minutes in, one can easily see the use of extreme close up shots, close up shots, and even a few mid shots. All of the extreme close ups can be perceived around 3:10 to 3:15; in this short time frame you see an aggressor draw a revolver shorty before the camera pans to Jones’ drawing his whip. The director obviously didn’t want the audience to think Indian Jones could be so easily overpowered. Throughout the first few minutes of this section you can see the director employ a few close up shots of Indiana and his companion. Doing so allows the viewers a chance to see their reactions as the film continues.…

Since the beginning of humanity, people have been trying to understand themselves. To achieve this, they have made near endless amounts of observations and amassed them to form a relatively good understanding of themselves. Most of these observations, however, have been made within societies and therefore most of the knowledge deals with civilized humans. On the contrary, the Bathtub depicted in The Beasts of the Southern Wild represents humanity separate from society. The people of the bathtub, including Wink, Hushpuppy, and their friends, are cut off from the rest of the world by a levee and are thereby detached from all laws.…

The Monster Squad is a Horror/Comedy classic released in 1987. When I say Horror, I mean it in the sense that it contains the Classic Universal Monsters to varying degrees. Which in my opinion is what really makes this movie as good as it is, because that certainly wasn't the writing. Honestly I had never even heard of this film until about six months ago, and after looking into I have no idea how I missed this film growing up. I can't feel that my lack on nostalgic goggles is bringing the film down or if it was just over-hyped.…

The sheer number of books being converted and adapted into movies has been steadily increasing for quite some time. And there are times, more often than not, where the recreation is mocked and criticised for being less than the original. This is where an interesting novel comes in, the science fiction adventure, Jurassic Park. Jurassic Park was written by Michael Crichton in november of 1990.…

According to world famous paleontologist Jack Horner, “Dinosaurs may be extinct from the planet, but they are alive and well in our imaginations. “ Horner’s words illustrate the fact that even though dinosaurs may never come back, they still draw attention in present day. Millions of years ago, dinosaurs breathed, walked, and lived on the face of the Earth. Dinosaurs were the dominant land animals for 160 million years, making them one of the most successful groups of animals ever. They first appeared about 230 million years ago and ruled the Earth for about 135 million years until an extinction event 65 million years ago that wiped out all the dinosaurs.…

Since the successful cloning to produce Dolly, cloning has been a worldwide controversial…
