This written task is related to Part 2 of the IB Language and Literature course, language and mass communication. In part 2 we studied about gender stereotypes and how they are portrayed by the media. To show my understanding of these topics, I decided to analyze the recently released Disney movie Moana. This task is mainly revolving around the princesses Moana, but also discusses the difference between Moana and the other princesses. The text will also explore several aspects and themes of the movie. Firstly, I will explore the theme of independence as a young woman’s coming of age wants to go out to the world to save her people from an evil force and doesn’t just wait to sit around wait to be saved by a prince or other male character.

Here are some of the reasons why I believe Moana is truly a feminist movie. We don’t see any love story involving Moana. From start to finish, Moana’s story is only about her. There’s no prince charming coming to rescue her, to marry her, or to express his feelings for her. The other thing we notice in this movie is, she is not just a princess, she’s a queen in her own way, not through marriage. When she accepts her role as leader, her village applauded her ability and respects her as their queen. The other point is she shows the ultimate independence, the long journey on a boat with only a chicken, she teaches herself to sail across the ocean, and completing her mission alone to save her island can be a perfect example. That is when I ask people, “how can a princess be more independent, both physically and mentally, can Moana be?”. She is the perfect example of a woman fighting by herself and not dependent on any person, thinking by herself to solve problems, and achieving her dreams by her own through hard work. The last point I would like to mention about Moana is that, she has a good and strong relationship with other women in her life, which is something we have yet to see in a Disney movie as all the princesses are fighting with others women for a prince or have a bad relationship with their own family member just because of a prince. Princesses are made to compete against each other in Disney movies, the witch and evil stepmother are very common in princess movies. Moana, instead, has positive relationships with her grandmother and mother, this shows that respect, love, and good connection can exist between the princesses and other women that are part of her

A classic princess story, Cinderella remains to be one of Disney’s most popular movies. However, what is disturbing is the manner in which this movie imposes gender roles by depicting women in a negative manner. This film seems to be reinforcing the notion that women are weaklings and that the only way in which any society can survive is by upholding male dominance and embracing female submissiveness. The movie begins by showing Cinderella living happily with her parents in a faraway kingdom.…

This particular article is also geared towards mothers of daughters who would have an interest in Disney’s princess brand. Bartyzel’s writings examine the portrayal of women in media as evidenced by the overarching title of “Girls on Film”. Bartyzel believes that there is often an issue with the way women are portrayed and that it has a detrimental effect on young women. There has been a lot of discussion around Disney in particular and the culture created by it’s princesses. Many, like Bartyzel, argue that Disney princesses are only showing girls one very narrow view of femininity and it’s an archaic one.…

In the article “The Princess Paradox,” Poniewozik discusses Hollywood movies produced for the public that convey an idealistic culture. Poniewozik claims that the princess culture is not despicable for young girls to know or experience and promotes feministic ideas by introducing certain movies. Poniewozik introduces that in 2001, many cinderella stories were produced bringing in a gross profit of 108 million dollars. Since then, Hollywood has decided to keep producing these cinderella stories and fairytales to continue bringing in this profit. “Call it nature or nurture, harmless fantasy or insidious indoctrination, but Hollywood is discovering that it still pays not to fight the royal urge” (323).…

This research paper is intended to discuss and analyze the structures as well as the evident differences between the Hero’s Journey—as depicted by Joseph Campbell—and the Heroine’s Journey—described by Maureen Murdock. In the former, female protagonists are frequently limited, and are exposed to challenges relating to sexualization and conforming to patriarchal societies that male heroes do not typically encounter, thus altering the progression and accuracy of the Hero’s Journey for women. On the contrary, the Heroine’s Journey pertains solely to women—which is limiting in itself—and revolves around the idea that a woman’s psychological inherencies will cohort her to resorting to the reliance or seeking of motherly instincts. However, the growing societal awareness of these socially constructed norms, along with the strive to eradicate stereotypes and promote gender fluidity, has and continues to be a leading causation for the dissipation of differences between the two. My paper will help demonstrate how this is highly influential in the neutralization of gender specific attributes in modern film.…

Negative attitudes and stereotypes are a part of society; they become bigger issues when these thoughts and beliefs turn into actions, such as discrimination and aggression. Over the last decade strides have been made to change societal ideals and norms but research shows discrimination among particular groups remains high. The results of a study done by The National Gay and Lesbian Task Force shows that members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) community experience high rates of discrimination and violence (Grant et al., 2011). Theories on the formation of attitudes and stereotypes include Social Learning, Social Cognition, Implicit Association. Resent studies have started to examine the effects media can have on attitudes…

It also teaches young girls that they are weaker, physically, mentally, and intellectually, however once a prince is found and you fall in love, all your problems will disappear. The film is irresponsible since it perpetuates female stereotypes and establishes the patriarchy as the means for women to be fulfilled. Cinderella is not given the same amount of respect as her step sisters Drizella and Anastasia by her stepmother. Cinderella is treated like a maid, and is far from having equal rights and being treated like a person. “Dont forget the garden, Then scrub the terrance, sweep the halls and the stairs, clean the chimneys.…
