She is very religious and believes everything is already predestined in life. It was Hayek’s first comedic leading role since beginning her career in Hollywood. Many stereotypes come into play throughout the film. One that stands out is the scene where Alex’s parents come into town for a visit and assume Isabel is the house maid. Her house décor taste involves bright colors and huge crosses hanging on every wall. It seemed like her heavy accent was used a lot for comedic relief, very fiery and tempestuous about her beliefs and culture. What did not make sense is how drastic Isabel’s life changes. Romantic comedies about Latina maids lack a true depiction of how hard and dirty the work really is. An example of a modernize Latina maid would be the film Maid in Manhattan. Jennifer Lopez, born and raise in the Bronx, NY, from Puerto Rican parents, was considered to be a “Latina supernova” (Rodriguez, pg. 220). She rose to fame after her depiction of Tex-mex iconic singer Selena. She is an actress that has been able to attract multiple audiences across different platforms. It was surprising to me that she took on the role of a domestic maid in a high scale New York Hotel. This role was very different from all the previous roles she had taken on thus far. In Maid in Manhattan, she plays Marissa Ventura, a single mother working as a housekeeper, but with aspirations to work in management. She experiences moments of discrimination due to her low- income class and at home, she is reminded by her mother that her dreams for an actual career are impossible and should step back into what the reality is for people like them.
