Some men and women may not feel that pressure because they are already accepting society 's gender roles, but others aren 't interested in gender norms or roles. In her essay “Who You Callin’ A Lady?,” by Kathleen Deveny makes a valid point by writing the following: “If we insist on holding women and girls to higher standards than men, we set them up to disappoint us.” (258) After reading her essay, I noticed both men and women are put in a standard based on their gender but women seem easier to “crack” under the pressure and to decide not to follow these gender roles and norms. I’m not stating this to say women and girls have it harder, but to just point out that they are the ones that seem to have more common high standards on them over men. Now many women aren 't even having children, let alone getting married and sometimes that is frowned upon. For years women have been trying to get farther and farther into the workforce because before the norms for women were to be just stay at home moms which included raising the children, cooking all of the meals, cleaning the house, and taking care of the husband. Well now we have men that are stepping aside and leaving their careers to become stay at home dads and letting their wives or partner become the breadwinner and this isn’t normally in male gender norms. In his essay “Stay-At-Home_Dads” Glenn Sacks addresses this new change by the following: “Despite the criticism, men generally focus on their careers not out of selfishness, but because most women still expect men to be their family’s primary breadwinners.” (265) I found this interesting because this can easily be controversial however there appears to be women who do that yet there seems to be women who don’t want that. This made me wonder how many men are only working and not staying home because of their wives or girlfriends thinking they need to be the breadwinner just because they are
