Since I was a young child, I have dreamed of working within the sport industry in any capacity. As I got older, I became interested in working with marketing to publicize and attract audiences of different genders, ages, races, and ethnicities to increase the diversification at sporting events. However, as I began to research how I could make my dreams reality, I came across the startling facts that women, especially women in Major League Baseball, in do not occupy many positions of power. For instance, my dream career is to work within Major League Baseball as a digital marketer trainee (entry-level), and then progress into leadership and management positions. Nevertheless, the past reports of women occupying these positions of leadership positions within the ranks of Major League Baseball are not as bleak as other sports, but the number of men versus women leaders still pale in comparison. According to the 2016 Racial and Gender Report Card: Major League Baseball, the Major League Baseball received a “C/C+” for gender with an overall “B” grade (Lapchick, 2016). However, with the breakdown of each category like Team Professional Administration, which include the jobs of assistant managers, marketing, and promotion. This category acquired a grade of a “C” for gender hiring. The league and its history of hiring of women, which received a grade of a “C” is disparaging for the hope of women who want to enter this career field. It is essential that the league and each of its 30 clubs improve and increase gender equality within the front office. Nevertheless, the low grade in the hiring of women in the front offices does not only affect the next generation of women entering into the field of sports as businesswoman (Harris, Grappendorf, Veraldo, & Aicher, 2014). For instance, the sport of baseball, which is the sport that I want to start my marketing career, is a sport where majority of its fans are over the age of 50, white, and male (Tuttle, 2015). Due to the fan base being exclusively male and white, baseball organization neglects to market or acknowledge women and minority women as viable fan bases within sports. This is because the ideas of male ideology, which resembles the belief that women and women of color are not capable to understand or participate in sports due to gender inferiority (Smith and Hattery, 2011). In an article titled, “The Evolution of Marketing To Female Sports Fans” author Kristi Dosh states that many marketing companies continue to use one particular strategy and belief that changing team apparel to the color pink, instead of keeping the team’s trademark color, attracts women to buy the sporting goods (2016, para. 1). This stereotypical belief that women can only relate to through the marketing of “feminie” sports products, which are more relatable to women because of the color choice.
